Vette(s): Silver 1974 Convertible - L82 4 speed Low miles (was only 8,900 when I bought it in March 2006) - Now 54K miles. Original owner bought it as an investment for son's college expenses. 2008 Jetstream Blue Convertible
On Saturday, the wife and I headed out of town to go visit some friends back in my hometown.  A little warm, but once we got going, it was a great day to have the top down in the Vette.

As we took our typical "shortcut" across a quiet state road that cuts some time and distance over the pure Interstate route, we came to a small town where the speed limit is reduced to 45.  I've gone through this town for 15 years and never seen a cop, but I slowed down anyway.

I often chastise my wife for being a "side-seat" driver, or as some here would call her, a "squeeky passenger seat" (back seat driver doesn't really work in a Vette).   However, I'm glad she saw what she did.  As we neared an intersection where cross traffic has to stop and my direction does not, a white Honda was pulling directly into our path.  Candi yelled "look out" and, well, it all happened in a flash.  I'm not 100% sure what I did.  I don't remember if I honked (don't think I did), don't remember looking around to assess the situation, but I'm sure I did.

I hit the brakes and turned into the opposite lane of travel.  The tires squealed and as I was sure I was going to hit the passenger side of the front quarter with his drivers side front, I turned the wheel just a little more, as he apparently did too and we missed by literally inches (if it was more than three, I'd be amazed).

The guy did stop and apologize.  He said he thought my direction stopped.  he then thanked me for driving defensively.  I told him I was highly motivated to do so.

We were shook up, but that was the worst of it.  At least I know my non-power brakes are just as strong as I need them to be!

Has anyone else out there had any close calls where you saw your car's life pass berfore your eyes?

I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

Wow Mardhall, thats scary Confused  I've been really lucky to have never had that close of a call like that.  Sometimes it's good to have a second set of eyes in the vehicle.  Glad the two of you made it through it safely.  ALWAYS gotta watch out for the other guy, cause we all know they ain't watching out for us.

Glad it was only a scare. It's also nice to know the other driver handled the situation as well as you did. Thumbs%20Up

I've had  a close call (we'll ignore the wrecks as a teenager...Shocked). I was sitting at a stoplight, waiting to turn left on a divided 4 lane highway. A carr on the the far side was waiting to turn left into my road. He proceeded to start his turn, and I hear tires screeching. I look to my left and see a car sliding. Look straight ahead and see a car in the middle of the road - then I see said sliding car hit the turing car in the passenger front fender/door area. The turning car then gets spun around and starts sliding towards my car. All I can do is sit there and watch. The car comes to rest a few feet from my car. Too close for me.....phewBtw, this wasn't in the vette, but still scary.

Seems nearly every time I take the Corvette out of the garage, some idiot comes way too close to hitting me.  Had a few close calls in the Corvette.  Seems classic old Corvettes are just another Honda Accord to 99% of the drivers on the road.

Vette(s): 1982 C3 Collectors Edition 44000 miles, sat in the sun most of its life, My wife purchased it for me for Father's Day in 2007 from her girlfriend that had it for 19 years. It is on the road again. I'm retired but it is now my daily driver.

I went to traffic school once had a great time and only took one item out of it.  Most accidences occur in the fast lane or slow lane.  Fatalities occur in the fast lane.

Three friend of mine and I were driving to a computer swap meet on a Sunday morning in Los Angeles.  I was in my Fleetwood in the fast lane driving north. The freeway is straight but goes up and down.

Something brought into my mind what I learned in traffic school so I just move into the next to fast lane.  Within fifty yards of doing that at 75 miles per hour (Standard SoCal minimum speed limit),  A car pasted me in the fast lane driven by an Older man.  Problem was he was going the wrong direction.

If I had not moved I we would have hit as I was unable to see him until we both crested the raise in the road.

God wanted me around for some reason.  Have not figure it out yet but he did.

Thank goodness that your wife saw the movement of the other car.  I'm not sure exactly what takes over in those split seconds,  but all your moves were in the right direction.  I suspect that the other driver will watch cross traffic flow and signals alot closer.

Glad to here you did not have a worse condition to tell us about. I had a truck change lanes right while I was in the lane, good thing there was an open lane for me to dodge into or I would have been road kill. I was traveling on the nice new bridge they made on the I-280 in Toledo Ohio.
