Simple little pocket reference we old dudes used before the 'net was the corvette black book for codes. Check your local book store.

Sadly the vin won't tell you much.

What are the codes on the trim tag? It is riveted to the underside of the passenger side dash, under the glove box. The VIN won't tell you anything other than what year model it is, and the sequential build number.
