Hey Guys - thanks for letting me in the door. Trying to find my way around here so if I've posted this in the wrong place, please give a chance to correct my error.
I am looking to buy some new weatherstripping for my '77. The ads I have seen differentiate between "early" and "late" models. How do I tell if mine is a late or early model? That is, did Chevy make the early models for six months and then make midyear changes? This would make sense but I sure would appreciate some confirmation my thought process is accurate.
I read the thread about decoding my trim tag. Lots of great info here!
Thanks.

Welcome to this forum! You will find many knowledgeable members who are glad to help.
The only weatherstrip that has an early and late in '77 is the T-Tops. Early had 19 pins, and no reinforcement molded in. Late 77 through 82 had 18 pins and a reinforcement molded into the edge in the center of the roof. All other weatherstrip for you car is the same for the whole model year.
We would appreciate an opportunity to serve you.

Larry - Many thanks for your quick reply.
One more question - will I be able to feel the reinforcement in the top weatherstrip or see the pins that have been molded in?

The "pins" are plastic(Normally a white/yellowed color), sorta like push-pins. They go thru the w-strip, and then push into holes in the t-top...just helps locate the strip. You should be able to work you fingers around in the w-strip and uncover the pins, depending on how bad/hard yours is.
When was your car born? That may make the "early/late" thing easier to determine.

I BELEIVE ONE OF THE FIRST EASY WAYS TO TELL EARLY FROM LATE IS THE LOCATION OF THE kEY FOR THE ALARM, EARLY KEY ON THE FINDER LATE KEY IN DRIVERS DOOR LOCK
Thanks for the additional replies.
I don't have the trim tag info with me right now to determien the build date. The car does not have the separate key for the alarm on the front fender.
I have purchased two different sets of crossed flags for the front fender - the originals were gone when I purchased the car. The mounting pins on both sets have been oversized for the holes in the fender by approx. 1/4" (too wide). The flags themselves measure the same overall size and are the same size as the set on the other fender.
I wasn't sure if there were two different sets of sets of flags available for '77 or whether this indicated the fender wasn't original. Or, potentially, something else?

Some '77s did NOT have the fender emblems...I believe only the really early cars had them. Don't think there was any difference in the size of the attaching studs/pins for any of the years, but I may be wrong. It may be simply the aftermarket emblems have larger pins...
The holes for the emblems on my '74 are pretty large...at least 1/4" or more. Or...are you saying the spacing of the pins is off?

Thanks Joel. I meant to specify it was the spacing between the pins is off. The diameter of the pins is correct.

All of that other discussion about alarm and emblems is interesting, and might be important to you at a future date, but to order weatherstrip you must check your T-Tops. The later one has an obvious reinforcement bar molded into it, and has 18 pins. If you can feel the bar, you have late. If you aren't sure about the bar, carefully count the pins. As a last resort, remove the old weatherstrip before you order the new.
I was not able to find a date or serial number for when they switched.

Thanks again Larry. I was able to check my trim tag today and the car appears to have been built in August, '77, thereby making it a real late car. I will have to check the tops before ordering the weatherstip kit to ensure the tops are original to the car.
