Simple Green and Purple Power are the two most widely used Green friendly products over the counter.
I like to use oven cleaner from the Dollar Tree (where eveything is a dollar). Followed by their version of Citrus Power to remove any residue. (Using the oven cleaner depends on the amount of grease on the area.)
I don't use much water to rinse off and catch everything on a El' Cheapo drop cloth with newspaper laid on top of it to aborb what might run off.
Then I roll it up in a ball and put it in a trash bag for curbside pick up.

I swear by Castrol Super Clean. It will remove the oil from anything, even you skin. I strongly suggest that you use vinyl or nitrile gloves when you use it or your hands will dry up and peal. It is non-toxic but you still don't want to drink it or bathe in it. On your block you can spray it on and use a scrotch brite pad to loosen it all up and then rinse it off with water. Once the surface is dry it is ready for paint. When I cleaned off the underside of the 69 I used a putty knife and then used Super Clean to remove 37 years of ick.
Thanks everyone for the info.
My car resides in a small barn about 100 feet from the house. In this barn I also have my F150 truck, a fishing boat, 3 cords of firewood, lawn tractor and its attachments plus all of the normal junk.
Since this barn is a large open space with a loft , I have built a plastic cocoon around the Vette; installed a heater, lights and a workbench with tools and a parts cleaning tub. My air comp. is in there plus inter-com to the house and I even have a walk in door (once inside the barn) to enter the cocoon.
So, you guys see why I would like to stay green as much as possible with my products. I don't want the cocoon to become a gas chamber and with the winter winds howling, I don't want to use my ventilation any more than I have to.
You also understand why I can't use pressure washing. It all has to be done slowly by hand and as non toxic as I can get. I'm planning on going to Sam's Club and get a BIG package of paper towels.
You guys have really given me some good ideas for products. Thanks abunch

I got a small garage and I really got to be carefull about gassing myself and the house out. Everytime I squirt a little PB blast the wife comes out and yells at me. I went on ebay and bought a 3M full face respirator and there are still a lot on there for sale. Thing works great for small spaces and nasty chemicals. I also throw down a lot of kitty liter if I got to make a mess inside the garage.
I've been using marine clean, POR-15 degreaser. It works really well and it didn't seem too toxic to the lungs or skin and you can dilute it with water to adjust the strength. I've used gunk engine cleaner also and it works pretty good. I took to using the old school foamy shaving cream in the army to clean up my machine gun and that worked great.
