As long as you make it clear to a prospective buyer that you did that, it is considered perfectly acceptable.
Before this gets too far out of hand, I think Larry's statement wasn't meant to mean it's ok to re-stamp to defraud someone. I believe what he meant was it would "acceptable" as long as any future buyer is made aware that the trans was NOT original, but had been stamped to appear that way.
It's a fine line...
As far as Judging goes, it's up to the Judges to determine the validity of any component, at a given time/place, regardless of prior knowledge. If a re-stamp is detected, it will receive a full deduct.

I understood what he meant.  I do not agree.  Here's what's coming:  Owner restamps his/her tranny and tells New Buyer that it's a restamp.  That makes him a good guy.  New Buyer turns around and sells the car to Second Buyer as numbers matching and original.  That makes New Buyer a bad boy.

We can't have it both ways.  The ethics of restamps cannot be based upon whether one is a guy guy or a bad guy.

A valid point there, Mike.

That was exactly my point Mike. There is no legitimate reason to do it. Someone will eventually get fooled into believing it is the original transmission. Not right anytime. My opinion only.

Scott, I agree completely.  To me a restamp is fraud.  Maybe counterfitting.  Someday it will turn out wrong.

What would really be the point of stamping it to make it appear correct, then tell someone it's is not correct?  Why bother with the stamp in the first place?   It just does not smell right.

That's right Ken. In my initial post I asked the same question. Why would you got to all of that trouble just to tell someone that it is stamped original but it's not really original. Not only does it "not smell right", it stinks. I guess it goes back to my boy scout days, a scout is honest, trustworthy, loyal....

If you have to replace a component like the tranny or radiator you go with New Old Stock (N.O.S.) right?  And once you replace something the designation of "Matching #s" is now void correct?

OK - I'm new to vettes and don't know...But....A salesman that I know that sells older vettes for a living at a recognized dealership states that the resale value of a vette is not imapcted if the tranny is not correct. Does it matter in NCRS judging? If so, how much. Can you still get top flight if the transmission os correct for the car but not matching numbers?

In NCRS Judging, the trans numbers are not normally checked, due to the difficulty in accessing them. As long as the car has the same type of trans(3-4 speed or auto) as it should have, it is considered at that time to be original, unless there is a noticeable deviation from stock/original.
