Vette(s): 1972 conv., sunfire yellow, blk interior, blk vinyl and convertible top. Off frame restoration with American Speed 383 stroker engine producing 500hp plus a 200hp NOS system. MSD ignition. Hooker super competition headers with chambered exhaust.
Thanks for the compliments guys. I'm happy with what the car ran but wish I had some other C3's with 383 stroker to compare it to. I want to try it so bad with the NOS but I can't afford to blow that engine.
I's not saying this to brag, but another car club member who has a 2007 Z06 ran his car 5 times that day with a best et of 12.5 @115. His car should be turning low 11's but he couldn't get any traction, even with those monster tires on the rear.

12 seconds with a street drivable car is fantastic. I am old enough to remember the thrill of getting into the 14s.
Congratulations!

Congratulations!

Jim,
Those are two very consistent runs for your Vette.
Now the only question is when are you going to get behind the wheel and run her down the track?

[QUOTE=dwright]Jim,
Dave,
To answer your question, I'm not embarrassed to say that I will NEVER try it again with street tires. Below is a post from the Corvettes International forum that invited me to a day of test-n-tune a couple of years ago.
Good to meet you today, Gail, and I believe it was Jim I also met for the first time ('72 383), Jim provided some entertainment with his very strong 383. It also has a 200 shot of NOS, but he didn't use it. Can't say I blame him since that car would not hook up at all on street tires. When he hit 2nd gear we all though that was it for the car, but JIm managed to get it back in control and avoid the wall. Good recovery!
Now there's 2 mistakes in that post. First of all, I didn't find it to be entertaining at all. I've never been that scared in my life. He mentioned me avoiding the wall when it should have been walls, plural.
I know now where I made my mistake. According to my dyno sheet, my car is making it's maximum torque, 512 ft. lbs @ 4200 RPM. I had always shifted at between 5500 to 6000 with not much tire spin but decided to shift at 4200 that day. The car broke traction and was all over both lanes of the track. I barely missed the wall on either side and I'm so thankful that I wasn't running another car. I think I set a new track record that day. If I remember correctly, I went thru the trap at 40.7 MPH.
When Tim ran my car back in November, he said he shifted at 6000 RPM. Now he's a very good driver but I was surprised at his low reaction time. I guess being a bracket racer, it doesn't matter as long as you're consistant.
Maybe somday I will get the nerve to try it again but only with slicks and I wouldn't dare hit the NOS, even with slicks.

Jim, All you need is practice. Ashley Force put her Nitro funny car into the wall a couple of times last year and had a real hairy spin out. this year she ran almost perfect.
If you don`t use the NOS to run the car, you can always set it up to purge out the side gills ( how cool would that look at a stop light)
good luck, Bob
Those were great times! Almost 12 flat, your 60ft times, 1.7-- are real good. By the way the reaction time has nothing to do with your 1/4 mile time. The clock does not start untill you cross the start line. The reaction time only lets you know how fast you got across the start line from when the light turned green. This is what gives you an edge when racing heads up. Two cars can have the same ET and one can get there before the other.
Be carefull if you go to slicks, drive line parts tend to start breaking then.
Your car is very fast, be carefull with it!

Some of the guys in our Corvette club cruised up to Beech Bend Dragway in Bowling Green last weekend. I have always wanted to see if my old '78 could run with the C5s. My buddy Mike was happy to oblige me with his 2004 coupe. Results follow;
Dave Mike
R/T .... .113 .194
60 ft... 2..088 2.399
330.... 5.798 6.276
1/8th 9.005 9.421
MPH.. 76.10 81.20
1/4 14.105 14.368
MPH. 97.15 99.41
No where near 12s, but 13s and the century mark are a good tune-up away. I'm happy!
