Vette(s): 1972 conv., sunfire yellow, blk interior, blk vinyl and convertible top. Off frame restoration with American Speed 383 stroker engine producing 500hp plus a 200hp NOS system. MSD ignition. Hooker super competition headers with chambered exhaust.
Well guys after 3 years of wondering, I finally got a 1/4 mile time on
my car. The local corvette club rented the track for a Sunday afternoon
and invited me up to the Fayetteville Speedway. My intentions were to
go as a spectator only because I still have vivid memories of almost
hitting the wall on my one and only try a couple of years ago.
I was fortunate enough that a friend showed up that runs regularly on
the strip and he agreed to drive my car. The first thing I did was
remove the chip that activates the NOS system, even though it was
turned off at the bottle and the switch underneath the dash. I like the
way my hood fits on my car and I didn't want to see it rearranged.
He ran 2 other corvettes, both using their NOS system. One had a 150
shot and the other a 200. Even though they beat him down the track, he
won both races because both of them redlighted. I was hoping my car
would be in the high 11's, even with a full tank of gas and on street
tires but after talking to Joel, he assured me I had nothing to be
embarrassed about. Thanks Joel.

12 sec on street tires, and a driver that prolly never drove the car before...I'd say high/mid lebens ain't too far of a stretch!
My '72, which was a street/strip car, ran 11.78s all day with 12" slicks...and wheelie bars!
This was back in '79-'80. All on the engine...no power adders. AND...it went to work and back just aboot every day.
I'd say yer car is a hot rod, Jim!

You're right Joel, he had never driven the car before. After the 2 runs, he wanted to try it with the nitrous but I didn't think it would be safe with the street tires. BTW, thanks for fixing the timeslips. Maybe someday I'll learn how to do that.
Were you ever late for work driving your 72?

nice Jim, glad you decided to post the times. I sent you an IM just prior to seeing you posted this. you`ll noticed i mention alot about the , track coditions , driver experience and reaction times. I can see that there is room for improvement in reaction times and with experience you`ll easily get it in the 11`s. Great Job!! Now i`m jealous that i haven`t got to the track yet. start running that NOS and they`ll probably require you to have a roll bar.

Very, very good Jim........you can enter into the 11's with a few more trys...fast car......I love it!
