When I closed the choke to about 85% closed the idle picked up to around 2000 RPM and cleaned up.
Is this wierd or what???
Dave
Not weird at all. It's running too lean, or you have developed a vacuum leak, which would also make it too lean.
Check all the vacuum lines closely. Pinch or plug them one at a time to make sure they are not leaking somwhere away from the carb. Check the PCV valve. Use some carb cleaner or propane and check for vacuum leaks at the carb base and intake gaskets.
If all of that is okay, run a good carb cleaner through the system (in the fuel tank) and use a spray down the carb opening. It's likely that the jets and/or passages are starting to clog after sitting for the winter. Did you use fuel stablizer? If none of this works, you may need to open the top of the carb, pull the jets and mixture screws, and clean the passages.
But a really good cleaner may do the trick without a teardown. The best I have ever used is Justice Brother Carb cleaner. Some brands of carb cleaner just don't work.
I removed the idle mix adj. screws and blasted the holes with carb cleaner and did the same with the air slots on top of the air horn. I then noticed an open 3/8" hose barb at the carb base and then saw the the heat rotted and brittled PCV hose I have been meaning to replace since '01 laying on the intake looking like it was hooked up to a phantom non-existant intake fitting.
I installed new deep groove crank and water pump pulleys a coupla month ago and musta knocked the hose off.
I went to my favorite parts house and got new 3/8" PCV hose and real caps to replace the jerryrigged pieces of tubing with screws in the end that had been installed over the past 20 years. It now runs and idles like a champ. Total cost around seven bucks.....
Ken, you were 100%... bad lean condition...
Now I'm gonna crawl into that hole......
Dave
I hate when the obvious is overlooked. I have done that many times. I bet it was starring you right in the face and never gave it a thought. Your hearing must be going too since a vacuum leak will cause either a whistle or hiss. It might be a good time to invest in some new vacuum hoses and connectors to replace the old brittle ones.
All the vacuum hoses have now been replaced except the HVAC hoses which are next on the agenda.
Back into the hole......
Dave
Luckily the Fox won't fit in my hole.
I'm driving it to Panama City , FL in a coupla weeks. Wish I woulda worked on the HVAC vac controls over the winter. It only blows cold out of the floor vents. I dread tackling that project...
