Adam should feel free to replace his engine, just don't give it away as a core. It is certainly cheaper to buy a new crate engine if you can't rebuild the old engine yourself with the help of a machine shop. My cousin just bought a brand spankin' new Merlin 509 cubic inch engine that made 680 horsepower and over 700 ft pounds of torque for $6200. I spent closer to $8000 to do my 427 over "my way" for my Corvette. Food for thought, should I have just bought a Merlin outright with no core and stashed my 427 away in the garage?
Anything I take off my car that is original gets bagged and tagged. I am not a #'s Nut but I want to save "what it was" for the next person who lucky enough to own it after I die.
I would take the original (if it is) engine (preferably as complete as possible) and put it on a stand with all ports plugged up so nothing gets inside the engine.
The plug kit for the engine is readily available from Summit and includes all the needed plugs to fill every opening on the motor. Eastwood makes a set of desicant containers that install in place of the spark plugs on the cylinder heads to keep the pistons from rusting in place. I have a early 350 small block out of a Corvette stashed in my garage this way. I figured if I ever damaged or required a long term repair my BB why not use it as a spare while I work on my 427. They certainly swap in and out easily enough.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do Adam!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!
