[QUOTE=ranger3]I alway follow the procedure prescribed by Norsky. Seems to be the safest method fo lifting and protecting the car.

That's the way I do it too. I Use a block of wood in the front to spread the load out on the front crossmember.

For the rear, I used to roll the jack under the diff. into position then reach around from the side and put a wood block on the jack saddle to avoid dropping the spare tire carrier. Worked for me. aceinthehole 2007-05-08 10:12:44

Great info , I had always heard that you shouldn't lift by the front crossmember but what you say makes sense. Even though I always open everything up (doors, Hood etc.) I didn't like the way it seemed to flex. In the future I'll do it your way

I also plan on taking my engine next weekend and when I look underneath the car the cross member looks like its been dented underneath. I am not sure I should do that. It looks like I could push it up even more. So jacking up one side at a time is not a good idea?
I NEVER use the front crossmember. I always lift from the side at the trans crossmember where it connects to the frame. Raise it up, set 2 jackstands, and do the other side. Sometimes even sliding the jack completely under the car to do the far side. I always go up on 4 stands, never just front or rear. Been doing my black 79 like this every winter for 23 years with no problems. I've never unlatched the tops or opened the doors to lift it either.
