pulled the gas cap off my 72 that i bought a few months ago, looked around under it and found the build sheet still on top of the tank after all these years. i plan on dropping the tnk soon and carefully taking it off and preserving it.

That is great! I think I'll be dropping the tank this winter to see if mine is still around. It has a lot of mileage, but its been under a roof for most of its life. I'm hoping its still there and in good shape.

When you get ready to drop the tank, a few words of advice. Take notes or digital photos of the tank setup, once the spare tire carrier is out. Then be very careful lowering the tank. You will have a fitting on the top rear portion of the tank that is a vapor condensing do-hickey. Nobody has these in reproducion so you will want to ensure that you don't damage yours. Take photos as you go along, especially once the tank is lowered. Then take good, high resolution photos of the build sheet. Dust the build sheet off with a soft brush and then carefully work on removing it.

Be very careful when trying to take the tank sticker off. You will likely find that it will begin to crumble. I suggest taking some crisp close-up pictures, but leaving the sheet on unless you are replacing the tank. If you want to protect it, I have seen guys place a clear plastic sheet that is slightly larger over the sticker and tapin the plastic to the top of the tank...sort of like a picture frame. Good luck.

Congratulations!!! Take lots of photos BEFORE you try to remove it. You can take a dry paintbrush to help dust it off some before you remove it so you can read it. Make sure you store it in an acid-free environment. You can get acid free archival supplies at the craft-store. ~Juliet

dropped the tank last week found the build sheet in rather good condition concidering its been on the tank over 30 years. took lots of pictures of it before i tryed to take it off. Its about 95% intact and still can be read. I guess i'm lucky. One tip.. apply some heat (i used a heat gun) to the tank or strap (where mine was glued to) before trying to remove it. it softened the glue and allowed me to remove it without too much tearing.
