Maybe I am a little paranoid but I only do business in person. When I transfer money it is in a bank and then go together to the tag agency to be sure there are no problems.

I wouldn't wire money to an individual without any concrete backup. Can you use PayPal or an escrow company? Paypal gives you some protection to ensure he goes through with the deal. A wire is cash and you'll have to track this guy down in court to get your money back if he walks away with the cash.
I flew to Az (from Boston)to buy my car. It was the best $199.00 I ever spent. I came home with the title and the order from the transportation company.
I'd go see the car, exchange the papers, and meet the seller.
As far as the title goes, you need him to sign the title (in the correct spot), and draw up a bill of sale.
Good luck!

I'd want to be there,Send him a grand and he could send you the title to the statue of liberty,I would want to be there, face to face.if you cant get a better deal than that, walk away, there are other Vettes out there.maybe right down the street,I don't know anybody who is willing to throw away a grand

I gotta go with the crowd on this one. Sending that kind of money unsecured is risky at best. I drove from NC to Arkansas to get mine, cash in the pocket, inspected the car and trailered it home.

Get the title faxed, or he can e mail you the original. I just went thru this, and you can get a title check at his state's DMV as far as owner history and authenticity goes for about $8.00. That usually takes about 8 working days. All states are different. You are buying sight unseen? Try to get a C3VR or NCRS member to check it out for you at the location, and they can check title out also.
Pay them to do it, anything they want, unless you can jump on Southwest cheap and go there.
Good Luck, I have been on both ends of sight unseen deals.

If you really want this car, do yourself a favor and spend an extra $150 or so on an attorney. You could probably find one in the yellow pages or call the local court and ask for a referral. Otherwise, don't send the cash.
Do you really want to send $1k to someone you don't know for a car you have not seen or driven. I just did a quick search for 75/76 in the NJ/Penn area and found 7-8 ranging from 4950.00 -17,000. You may want to sit back and reconsider buying site unseen. My $.02
