Vette(s): 1981 Bowling Green Two-tone (silver/charcoal). Mainly stock 350, auto, 33K miles, great shape.
Folks,
My gas gauge has always worked fine but now is pegged all the way to the full side (like in the 3:00 position). I've read the service manual, but not being an electrician, it is pretty confusing. I've looked at the fuse and it looked OK but I changed it anyway. I've checked the black ground wire from the sending unit to the chassis and is looks tight and clean. Has anyone had this problem?? Are the next steps pulling out the gauge or dropping the tank or is there some other options I can do? Thanks. Tom. |ohwell|

OK Tom, I sort of had the same problem when mine wouldn't start. Your car starts right? Go to the tank neck and remove the rubber bladder, there are 3 wires ther. Black (ground) brown/white and brown. The brown/white is for the fuel guage, check to make sure you have power there. The other wire is for the fuel relay which controls the guage too. You might have a relay that is going bad.
That's what was wrong wioth mine, when the relay is "open" the needle pegs out. At least that's what did it on my 82

Thanks for the information Chris. When I pulled out the rubber bladder at the fuel filler cap I discovered the power wire (pink in an '81) was disconnected from the peg sticking out of the sending unit. I reattached the wire and it is working fine now. Without your help I wouldn't have look there for the problem. Thanks again. Tom. |wavey|
