I'm wondering something here....with Destiny's tail off, where is the tank sticker located? What does it take to remove it and should I remove it? Do you have to take the tank out?

From what I've read in other threads in this and other forums on the site, the darn things could be just about anywhere in the car. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason to where they got stuffed. I haven't done too much looking yet, but hope I stumble into one on "The Toy". Especially since records for the St. Louis plant seem to MIA.

There is (or was) one glued to the top of the gastank on all sharks. There are second and possibly third copies stuffed in various places in the car. If the tank sticker hasn't decayed into oblivion or the tank hasn't been replaced before it should be there. Sometimes it's visible by peeking past the rubber gasket in the filler. Look on the driver's side. Sometimes they're on the top of the tank - other times over the edge towards the front. It all depends on the mood of the guy slapping on the glue at the factory and if he was distracted or not. ;) Some folks have been able to reach up & retreive (minimum glue solution) - but others have shredded it doing so. Your best bet is to drop the tank. That's not too big a deal if your exhaust is already out and the tank near empty. There a few straps holding it in & that rear bar with a few bolts. Of course you'll need the spare assy out of the way too. But it's pretty straightforward wrenching. It's a valuable piece of documentation for your corvette, especially if you have a collector or rarer set of options and are going the originality route. If your hotrodding the car then come resale time it won't matter price wise, other than sentimental curiousity and a cool old piece of paper which may or may not be readable. ~Juliet |rollysmile|

Thanks you two for the great advice on where and how to find it if it's there. One more question though, why did they put them in other parts of the car? I find that a bit weird, but hey, aren't we all! |toungecool|

I'm probably going to look a little this weekend. Its a shame because this past winter I had the spare assembly out when I was painting it and had never heard of the build sheet being up on the tank. But like you said it was all straight forward wrenching so I'll just have to see how much time I have this weekend. I'd like to have one stuffed between the speedo and the tach because that would probably be in pretty good shape compared to one on the tank.

They were stuffed into other parts of the car because that was the easiest way for guys along the line to get rid of the extra copies. If they kept them around their work area, they'd have to clean them up. Not weird at all when you think about it, simply expending the minimum amount of effort to get the job done.

When I had the rear bumper off ''Rosie'' I looked for the sticker...and it wasn't on the gas tank......so the hunt is still on....I am hoping that it is behind the dash or under the carpet.....but won't find out for a while...still got some body work to do and then she gets some paint...gonna be starting on the interior next year.

Hi vettevixen..On my 1980 and a few other 1980 Corvette's the tank sticker is located above the spare tire lid facing inward toward the front of the gas tank. I will never remove my tank sticker. I found a GM guy here in Canada that has all the import data and he sent me all the information about the car I really need...

Hey Darcy! How ya doing? It was sure fun talking with you last night and trying to figure out the picture thing! lol Anyhow, I'm not going to go look for mine either. It's been there for 20 years (hopefully still there) so why take it out now? I'll be going down to the shop to see her on Friday. "We" are still fighting over paint. My company will paint 70%, now I've gotta get proof that I show, parade and cruise the car. I tried to explain that it was insured as a show car, but that didn't help. So, good thing Steve and I take pics of us with our cars and trophies, club photo, run photos, all that. It's such a pain, and I'm the one who got hit dang it! |ohwell|
