I posted this on Corvette Forum and got no reply.
I guy I spoke to who people say is an EXPERT on Corvette told me they had some COPO cars in 1978 and 1982. He is about my age 65+ and appears to have a good knowledge of the cars. I am TRYING to find the factory sticker for options on my 1978 that is what started the conversation.

Afaik, you can still COPO(Central Office Production Order) cars from GM. Can't say what, if any Shark cars were ordered that way, but I'd be willin to bet some were. It's a good question....I've never really even thought about it.

Speaking about the ZL1, Years ago I was visiting the Chevy Tonawanda, NY plant and they had a ZL1 sitting in the lobby on display. The woman I went with mentioned I was staring at it and thought I might have been drooling a little
. She didn't understand, not a car person. Later, I heard that it was a shell and not the complete engine.

That being said, this is a great question and I would guess that the NCM would have an answer.

The ZL-1 wasn't a COPO for the Corvette...it was a regular production option(RPO). Now...in the Camaro, it WAS more of a COPO.
The only thing that would pertain to the ZL-1 Corvette was the second one. The first known ZL-1 is the yellow one, very well known by all. The other ZL-1(only 2 were sold) is less known, but it was originally owned by a former member of C3VR, and is well documented, tho some self proclaimed "experts" still discount it. Why? Because it has an automatic trans. John has the original paperwork, build sheet, everything proving the car is an original ZL-1. He ordered the car with an automatic because of the type of racing he was going to be doing with the car. He met with resistance from GM, but eventually got it built the way he wanted it. Was it a COPO car? Well...kinda sorta. He had to have someone high up in GM to authorize it, so in a sense, it was a COPO car.
Some of you may remember seeing the car here....John sold it a few years ago, and the controversy still lingers over it, but it was, and still IS, one of the 2 ZL-1s sold.

Thank you. I am TRYING to find the build information on my 1978. Since I had a 1980 before this that did not handle well at all this one is like on RAILS. I punched it a got TWO nice even black Streaks for my $2.00 worth of gas. I will keep up the search and enjoying the car.
