In the past week I developed a problem with my right headlight door not opening. Using the vacuum guide at corvette-101 I have identified the problem as the headlight actuator. The part is ordered and Im waiting for it to arrive. I can see how the actuator is mounted but am concerned about how to remove it once the screws holding it are removed. Can I unscrew the actuator rod from the clevis that attaches to the rest of the headlight assembly or is it possible to carefully rotate the actuator to unscrew it from the clevis without disassembling the rest of the headlight assembly?? The actuator is sure close to the hood, I know caution is essential here. I searched for old thread on this but didnt find any that answered this question. Any help appreciated.

I would suggest you not unscrew the clevis rod until the actuator is out, and you have the new one ready to install. That way, you can count the number of turns required to get the clevis off of the rod, and then you'll be able to re-install the clevis on the new actuator in the same position, saving some adjustment time.(If you want you can wrap a piece of tape around the actuator rod just behind the clevis, and remove the clevis, still counting the turns. At least you'll have the tape there as a guide for how far to reinstall the clevis.)
Remove the two springs that are on the pin that goes thru the clevis, and then the cotter pin that holds the pin in place. Slide the pin out of the clevis, and the headlight bucket. Watch for the nylon bushings that should be there.
Then remove the nuts holding the actuator to the bucket assy, after removing the vac. hoses. It is easiest(for me, anyway) to remove the actuators from underneath. Place a thick blanket, or some form of padding across the (open)hood for protection from the inevitable "OOOOPS
"! Twist and turn the actuator, and just about the time you give up, it will fall out on your head. Reassemble in reverse.
hope this helps...

Leave the clevis on the shaft until you get the actuater out, just pull out the pin that holds it to the arm that raises the headlights after you have carefully removed the springs, the easiest way I have found to get the actuaters out is to lower them right straight down and out the bottom through the valance panel You'll have to do some wiggling but it works.once you get the actuater out of the car, then remove the clevis, when you unscrew it from the shaft, count the turns as you unscrew it.when you put it on the new actuater put it back on the same amount of turns, then reverse the procedure to reinstall it .study the parts when dissasembling the springs and pin there are several parts make sure you watch how everything comes apart a little WD -40 cant hurt when putting them back together

Thanks guys, thats exactly what I needed to know. I appreciate your quick replies. Ive got everything already juiced down with PB blaster so hopefully those fasteners will come off without too much force... yeah right.

Good idea Kevin, thanks. Well I got the old actuator out. The PB blaster helped some but still had to use lots of encouragement and blue language to get the nuts off of it. I see that my question about removing the clevis before removing the actuator from the car was kinda comical..... IT AINT COMING OFF. I have it soaking in PB but I dont think its going to budge so its another order to Riks corvette for a new one.
I had to put heat to the clevis/rod to get mine off, PB wouldn't do it. But you have to be REAL CAREFUL so as not to melt any of the plastic/nylon parts on the the thing....

Are you using vise grips on the clevis rod?

Yep using vice grips and PB with no luck. Im going to try to pull the plastic bushing out of the clevis and apply heat this afternoon as Daniel suggested to see if that will break the threads loose. Ill keep you posted on how that works. It seems that nothing simple is ever easy with these cars....why do we love them so
