HI Guys,

Did not know where to post this so I picked general.

The lock nut key the previous owner gave me with the car is stripped. I have a number on the key.

Where can I get a replacement key or how do I get the old lock nut off without a key?

Note that when the tires were put on the car they must have used that DAMN air tool with the torque set too high. I got the other nuts off but what a PITA.

Sorry, had to vent a little.

I need to get the wheels off because the calipers in the rear have started leaking.

Thank you!

Bill

Most of the tool guys (Snap-off, Matco, etc.) have a socket for removing these lug nuts. It is double ended for diff. sized(OD)nuts. I have one, and it is a great time (& butt) saver. I don't know if Craftsman (Sears) has one, but it might be worth checking into. It actually grips on the outside of the locking nut, and it only works to remove them, not install. I hope this helps. I have resorted to a piece of pipe on the nut, and bending it untill it breaks, |cussing| |cussing|but now I have this socket, and I love it. Good luck, I hope this info helps. |hammer| |hammer| |wavey|

I had this happen on one of my wheel lugs. I thought it was a good reason for me to go out and get an air compressor and air tools. I loosened the other lug nuts first and kept trying with the air compressor on the stripped one and finally it broke free. You might also try bringing it to a tire store to see if the can loosen the one lug for you. I already had my master cylinder off before I realized the lug was stripped, so I was stuck getting it off at home. Good luck, you will get it. |saluteflag|

Adam,I see in your profile you have a top flight award. How does this happen and what kind of condition does your car have to be in.I'm asking because My 82CE is very low miladge and has orginal paint and interior.Nothing is missing anyware(body, engine)Pretty much as it left factory. It does have a couple of mods. The trans has a shift kit.Stainless dual exaust no cats and a different sound system.and some kind of preformance chip thing.Other than that you can't tell from stock.SORRY wrong thread |hammer|

Thank you. I may know a mechanic from whom I mayborrow the tool.

Do you just drive it on over the lock/nut?

Bill

Bill, the socket just slips over the outside of the lock-nut, and actually grips it as you turn the wrench c-clockwise(lefty-loosie/righty-tightie |laugh| )It may leave a few scratches on the outside of the nut, but it really beats the alternatives. |hammer| |hammer| |cussing| No metric hammer required! |laugh| |thumb| |wavey|

I took the locking lugs off my 79 BEFORE I had a problem. Didn't like the way they looked either. Found just 4 NOS lugs on ebay for $10. Vette's never out of my sight, tho.
Had the old style with a regular type key on my GTO years ago. Outer shell would spin when locked. Any one remember those stupid things? Had to break them off.
Mike

Adam,

I cannot wait to see if it works. I am curious to see how well the sockets grips the chrome. I am gpoing to check with the local parts store. They carry a lot a specialty tools.

If we ever meet I owe you a beer.

Once I get it off they are going in the trash. The car never leaves my sight. No more lock lugs. |cheers|

Yes, they work great on the chrome nuts, as most locking lug-nuts are chrome.Hope you find one @ parts house.Worth a shot. |thumb| |wavey|
