Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.
Scot,
I went out back to my vette, and did some checking.
First, I found out something that I didn't know. It does have a battery hold down clamp. I also found it in my assembly manual. It has a part no., but I don't know if that is how you would order it from Chevrolet. You can still get a lot of items directly from Chevy for an older vette, and sometimes it is a lot cheaper, than corvette parts houses. They don't give those parts away.
I'll send a pic on e-mail.
Second, The hole under the battery is a drain hole, I think mine has a tube running from it. I tried to look under it, but it needs to be up in the air to look good. I don't see how they can gig you on that. Probably because of no hose.
Third. I don't think you can get every day driver ins on historic plates. In Illinois, you can legally get them for cars used in parades, or back and forth to shows. If you get caught driving every day on historic plates, you can get a ticket.
The rest are things which do cost quite a bit, but you need to get them fixed before driving too much. Especially the BRAKES. That should be no 1 before driving...
Good luck with getting your vette inspected, and running.
|QUOTE|Paragon75Ray said: Hey guys...I think this is my first post here, but I've been reading since I got my 75 Stingray about 2 weeks ago. I'm in MD and 19, so I MUST pass MD inspection to be insured(
). Anyway, paid my $$$ to get it inspected and here is the list of reasons it failed.
No Mufflers
No Battery Hold Down
Hole Under Battery(in the fiberglass, what a
to inspect that closely)
No Back-Up Lights
One Taillight/BrakeLight/Turn Signal out(I fixed it!! Went out on the way over :(
Power Steering Leak @ Pump
Power Assist Valve is Shot
Lower Control Arm Bushings(shot, missing I dunno)
Both Rear Rotors are Shot
I need a daily driver and I figured I could get Historic Insurance and drive no problem and just have a bad Vette and still an Incredible vehicle, nope. Anyway, having already spent more than what I'll earn this summer, can I fix this beast or should I put it on E-bay and hope to get my money back? Anyone who knows HOW to fix these things and can explain it/do it for a case of beer is more than welcome to post their advice or come visit me + my White Witch in Southern Maryland =) just post or e-mail. hehe. Seriously tho, ANY help is appreciated, even posted.

Vette(s): 82 Collector Edition (*sold 12/2006)
To those who are thinking about selling their vette I've got a little story for you to show how much these beauties (or any car for that matter) can mean to you. When I was a kid, I promised myself that I'd have a vette by the time I was 30. I bought my first 82 CE for my 30th birthday. With "extra" money that I saved for like 6 years. I have my 2nd one now, and she means everything to me. I don't have children, by choice. Destiny is my child. When non-car people ask how can I baby a car so much, not leave her alone too long, make sure no one touches her, well, I ask them if they've got kids, and then I make the comparison. You don't leave your kids alone too long, do you? They usually back right off. lol Anyhow, I try to do as much as I can myself on her, but I ask for alot of help too. It's fun and a challenge and a total pleasure to own her. I wouldn't trade her or sell her for any amount of mony or any other ride. I've always said.....men and friends may come and go, but my car will always be there. Kind of a security blanket...Nice blanket though!

Here is a junk yard listing that I found over a year ago. It used to be free, but they started charging, just to make a search. They can find parts that you need in junk yards all over the US. It really works good, but it could get expensive...

Hey Scott
I am in MD too and for a 1975 vette it sounds like you didn't do too bad if that was the only things the inspection station got you for. I have historic tags on my vette so I didn't have to get it inspected but I did just to make sure it was safe. With historic tags you are only supposed to drive it on weekends or to/from shows but I drive mine whenever I want and I have never had any trouble with The Man. (I work at DOT and there are state cops all over the place there). But, with collector car insurance you can only put a limited amount of miles on the car. It's a little different with each insurer.
As for the work you need done, I think everyone has given you some great advise. You may want to buy the parts yourself and have a shop do the labor. I save money sometimes like that when I am too lazy to do my own work (most of the time). Another great book is a Chilton Hours (Hourly?) manual. It shows how long it should take to do just about any job. It will save you a ton of money cause you can tell the shop you are dealing with you know what the job should cost (just ask what they charge an hour). I got the book at the Ollies Bargain outlet (there are 4 or 5 in the MD area) for about $8.00. (usually about $29. +. They have lots of auto books. Got a Corvette repair guide there too for $5.00.
The junk yard I usually go to is called Crazy Rays, two locations, one in Baltimore and one in Jessup. There is a big yard in southern MD called Brandywine Used Auto parts. Call them first, because it is harder to find the older cars there. The cool thing about Crazy Rays is that they let you go in and get the parts yourself.
Don’t give up! If you get into a real bind, email me and I’ll try to make time to come over and help. What town are you close to?

Paragon 75 Ray,
I am sorry to hear of your problems. It proablly is a blessing though. Some of the things that failed are serious. Steering and brakes!
I know money is tight, but try to use new parts on the brakes and steering. try Vette Brakes for your parts. Their # is (800) 237-9991.
I am not too sure how old my catolog is, but rotors are $89.95 each. They also have a complete line of replacement parts for your steering.
I live in PA and as much as people bitch about inspections, it could save a life. I have Classic tags on my 76 and it still requires a yearly inspection. $25.00
Good Luck,
Dutch

Here's the web site for Vette Brakes (http://www.vettebrakes.com/). In the August/2002 issue of Vette there is an add from Muskegon Brake (http://www.muskegonbrake.com/) that lists rotors for $60 each (4 or more for $55 each).
