I am just now starting to hunt for a c3.  Have bookmarked a number of sites on the internet where Corvette ads can be found.  Are there certain sites that are "favored" by the Corvette community?  I have noted that some ads seem to be many months old and even one I was drooling over the pictures had been up for nearly two years already, yet there were recent ads on the site as well.  I hesitated to call thinking mabe it was merely a "vanity ad" or that there was something terribly wrong with it for the ad to have run for so long and still be available.  My original logic was that I would need to watch for fresh ads and be ready to pounce on a good deal, that older ads were probably problem cars or problem sellers.  Perhaps that view is too narrow.  What is the experience of the community with regards to searching for your dream car?  Did you only follow up on ads that were within or close to what you thought was reasonable, or did you target a few cars that appealed regardless of the asking price and then use negotiation tactics to work a deal.  Whats the bias between opportunistic hunting and selective stalking?

Vette(s): Silver 1974 Convertible - L82 4 speed Low miles (was only 8,900 when I bought it in March 2006) - Now 54K miles. Original owner bought it as an investment for son's college expenses. 2008 Jetstream Blue Convertible
I'll repeat much of what I just said on my post about e-bay (I don't advise nor advise against buying a car on e-bay, but I think it's a good place to look for ideas).

1. Know what you want - when I went looking, I was very specific in what I wanted and in the long run, it cost me more, but I'm very happy.  If you're more flexible, it will help you get a better price.
2. Know what condition you need a car to be in - biggest problem it seems people run in to is think they can "fix up" a car on their own for cheap.  I don't know your skills, but fixing and repairing a 30 year old car can be tough (but the folks here are always willing to help!).  The advice I got was to buy as complete and road-ready car as I could.  I did, and I'm glad
3.  Know what you are willing to pay - if you want to spend $15,000 and the car is $25,000, can you afford it, and will you regret it?
4.  Know what the market price is - you can get this info from a number of sources, including this site.  Tell people what you want and they'll tell you what to spend.  Also, Corvette Magazine recently published their C3 Market report noting prices for various quality levels of each year along with additional $ for certain options.  Most here (including me) will agree that their prices are above what you should pay (at least for "show ready") and you should use those as a guide only.
5.  Have fun and be patient.  As I got into my second month of my search (which I didn't think would take that long), I started to get frustrated and almost gave on some of my requirements for the car.  I didn't and I'm glad.  I had a lot of fun with the search.
6.  Know how you'll pay and have your money ready in case you come across that deal that's too good to pass up.  See the recent thread on here about how others paid and thier philosophies.

Ok, now that all of that is out of the way...  I'm sure others will have advice on where to look, but I really liked:
- Corvette Mike (multiple regional locations)
- Pro Team Corvette (prices generally too high for me)
- Used Corvettes For Sale.com (one of my favorites - I thought the search criteria were good)
- American Sportscar Center (where I ended up buying my car)
 - and of course, e-bay, although I used that just for a reference.

I used lots of other sites as well, again, mainly just for reference.  You will see the same car on many of these sites.  I suppose your thoughts on the "fresh ads" makes sense, but I don't know that all of the "older" ads are junky cars.  Some may be overpriced and maybe the seller is tired of having it for sale and is willing to deal.

Where to look?  Yes, I tried to look mainly nearby, but honestly, in the end, I had it down to 2 cars - one in California and one in Virginia.  Keep in mind that I live in Indiana.  I drove the California car when out there on business (I had found it on a search before I went).  In the end, I went with a car out of Georgia.  They called me on Monday when I was prepared to make a decision on the other two by the end of the week.  Saturday morning, I was in Atlanta and drove the car home that day.  I had sent them an e-mail a month or two before telling them exactly what I wanted, and they happened to find it.  There are many "Corvette Dealers" around, and most of them would be happy for someone to tell them exactly what they want.

Ok, enough from me.  Just remember to have fun and that the folks here won't steer you wrong,  As you look, tell us what you're finding and how much the seller wants and we can tell you if it's a good deal.

I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

Good reading here.  Worth the price of a copy.  Do your homework and know what you're looking for.

It's entirely up to you, but personally I would not buy any automobile, Corvette or otherwise, which I could not take a look at and inspect before the money changed hands.  My advice is to buy close to home.  Start with local sellers.  Contact Corvette clubs in your area.

Smile

After I put up my post, as if I hadn't written enough, I regretted not noting Richard Prince's book.  It was very valuable in my search.  Mike Yeager of Mid America Corvette also recently published a book he calls the Corvette Bible.  It is a buyer guide as well.

Good point Jeff, don't buy sight unseen.  Granted, I traveled almost 1,000 miles to buy, but if the car hadn't been everything I anticipated it would be, I was prepared to around and go home with no money being exchanged.

I used VetteFinders.com - they seem to have a lot of choices from all around the country. If you see something you like out of state, and can't afford to travel just for a "maybe", put out a call right here at C3VR, and if one of the members is in the area, they just might check out the vehicle for you, or provide you with a contact (Vette club, local Vette mechanic, etc.).

Vette(s):
SOLD - "The Toy" - '70 Convertible
SOLD - "The Beast" - '90 ZR-1 (#682)
SOLD - "Betty" - '28 Ford Model A Tudor
SOLD - "BLKBRRD" - '78 Pontiac Trans Am
"BLUBYU" - '04 Coupe
I used CollectorCarTrader among others to find "The Toy".  It was in western PA so I contacted a local Vette restorer to do an inspection on the car before making the buy.  Made the deal contingent on a good report and my liking it when I saw it.  Arrived at the Pittsburgh airport, looked over the car, liked it, signed the papers, and drove it back to Minnesota.

Found both "BIGBRRD" and "The Beast" in the local paper.

Happy hunting...!!!
