I have changed my heater core and thats one job you want to do as a last resort, if they did your 72 like mine your going to hate life when changing it.If you put in a thermostat you might want to use a fail safe, they fail in the open position so you wont overheat.

One thing no one mentioned is the possibility of are being trapped by the t-stat. It does not allow water to flow, and can cause the car to overheat.
 
You could drill a small hole (1/16") on the outside ring, or do like I did, and buy a good "fail open" t-stat, with air holes.

i usually drill 3 holes that are an 1/8th inch
