Like Mike, I would like to go cruise Hawaii.

The big island is great, but I was stationed on Oahu for 3 years and drove around the island many times.  It is a little over 100 miles around with green mountains on one side and the clearest blue water on the other.

I had a Kawasaki trail bike and used to ride the fire breaks and trails up through the mountains with several buddies.  Great fun, but I never went without getting wet.  Sudden downpours are common in Hawaii.

I was stationed on Oahu for just over three years and lived on the Big Island for about a year, so I can vouch for both roads.

I had a '91 convertible on Oahu and almost never had the top up. Yeah, there were a lot of rainy moments, but if you hit the gas and kept going it would blow right over the top. The rain would stop in a few minutes anyway. Those were the days!

My favorite driving road there was the Pali Hawaii. I would head back to the Marine Base at Kaneohe Bay, and see just how fast I could take the twists and turns coming down the mountain. I went through two sets of tires and brakes in three years, and put over 60,000 miles on the vette!

Hey, Bryan.  I was stationed at Kaneohe from 1974 to 1977.  I agree, the Pali Tunnel and highway was a great challenge.   Nice view and scenery too.  I didn't have a vette then, but sure wish I would have.  Didn't get my first one until about 4 years ago.

Used to watch Magnum PI and wish I could someday cruise the roads he would travel on! Was on the Big Island from 92-96 and loved those roads. Not really that much rain on my favored southern route. Also, not a road for a Vette but the saddle road was pretty neat also. A friend of mine had car trouble on that route once and managed to get over the "hump" and coast all the way down to Hilo, maybe 40 miles with the motor off! Took several trips to Oahu for shopping and getaways and found it pretty crowded, tho.  Mike

One of the hazzards of driving Hawaii, tho! Lot of foreigners who don't have a clue. The Nova got backed into by a school bus! A guy crossed the center line and clobbered my van. Only real accidents I've had in like 35+ years. Oh, and out of order stoplights mean GO FOR IT!!, not stopConfused.

Mick,

What happened to poop-on?

There are a bunch of great driving roads around Tahoe. I have driven many of them in a rent-a-wreck to various ski areas there. Everyone going to Carson City this June are in for a super driving time....

Vette(s): Silver '81 mostly original C3. Silver interior, bilstiens, big sway bars, headers.
NZ: Surf Highway 45, a 120km scenic blast which circumnavigates our local Mountain Mt Egmont (8280 feet) and is almost identical to look at to Mt Fuji. But I might be biased on this one

USA: Hard one, but of the places I have driven I would have to say Grand Canyon (south side) to Hubbell Trading Post, (across top of painted desert), and then down to Tucson. Just stunning.

Europe: that's also a hard one, its all so good ! Prob go for Munich to Venice (across the Alps), all those long tunnels, high viaducts, and awesome scenery.

Wow, you guys are GREAT & have earmarked some really great places. I have put put each of them into my "Places To See" trip planner. They also make for some great ideas for future gathering events.
Some of these places I have never heard of before. They sound very interesting & fun to drive. My only other question at this point is "When do we go?"

Well, Tux, as much as I would love to try all the roads and highways in Hawaii, Europe and Australia, I just don't think I could afford to ship my vette and myself there.  Cry

Unless I win the lottery, its just one of those things you dream about, I guess.

But, of coarse this is just wishin, so I'm ready to go when you are!!

I am on board with DeeBoy59 - I am a Michigan guy so the thought of being able to drive my ride up and down Highway 1 is exactly what I was thinking I would want to do if I could.  Who knows maybe I'll hit the lottery and my car will become a trailer queen so I could get it out there.   LOL
