Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.
Two days ago, I was going to go Vette cruisin', so I got in the vette, and started it, and something didn't feel right, so I shut it off, and tried to start it again, and the key wouldn't turn far enough to start it. I was luck enough to be in my garage, so I decided to work on it. After reading 3 manuals, talked to a friend of mine, and decided it was the ignition switch up on top of the steering column. The first thing was to get it started so I could put it in my back garage,so I could work on it in air conditioned comfort. I jacked it up, put jack stands under it(safety), shorted out the starter, got it started, and drove it to the back. I worked most of the afternoon on it, got it running again, and was trying out the new switch, and this time, it locked up in the start position. Had to hurry and disconnect the battery. The engine finally died, now I think it is the switch in the steering column. So now I get to do the whole operation again, only this time I will remove the whole steering column, put it on the bench, and make damn sure I am right. All adjustments will be made on the bench. Hopefully I will get it running shortly, but I'm in no big hurry. I'm going to do it right this time!!!
Sometimes things just turn to s--t!!!
Other than that it is a great day.
To those who don't know, the long time broadcasater, Jack Buck passed away Tuesday. He was one of the best, if not the best broadcaster in sports.
I'll always remember "THAT'S A WINNER", and "GO CRAZY, FOLKS"
HE WAS ALSO A VERY GENEROUS, AND CAREING INDIVIDUAL.

If you get REAL tired of fixing your steering column, I have the address of a rebuild shop that is VERY reasonable. I sent him a fairly totaled tilt/tele column and for under $200.00 he returned a real work of art, including three extra keys.
There's lots of good steering column stuff on the Corvette FAQ website. It's better than the stuff in the manuals because it comes from a GM engineer retired from Sagainaw Steering. I was able to do all of my adjustments with the column dropped and the steering wheel resting on the seat. Don't forget to check the accessory position too.

Scott,
I want to thank you for the info on the webpage. It really helped me do the repairs. By the way, I did this repair for $23.00, and didn't break anything...
