Well, I been out werking on the two Corvettes, getting them ready for the trip to Hot Springs in a few days(tick-tock...).

I found my fuel leak, and it was exactly what I suspected, the vapor separator on the driver side/top of the fuel tank. The top of it is glued together from the manufacturer, and it had cracked at the seam. A little Model Master cement, some drying time, and then a good smear of sillycone should have it sealed up again. No more raw fuel smell, or leaks, when the tank is full!

Then, I have had this annoying vacuum leak since, well, forever....I decided to track it down. I was thinking it was the brake booster, and I was close. The vacuum check-valve wasn't holding vacuum as it should, so I swapped the one off of my twuck. Well...it still had a hiss when I turned the engine off. I got to feelin around where the master cyl. bolts up to the booster, and sure enough...

So...I take the master off, and the danged grommet that seals the booster is just sorta layin there...not really attached to anything. I pull the rod out, and find that the seal doesn't seal very well at all to the rod. NOW what am I gonna do? These things aren't available anywhere, except booster rebuild places....ya just ain't gonna get one at Pep-Gurls.

So now, I'm trying to figure out what the heck I can use to seal this thing. Then I think of something really kewl...I dig in my special box-o-goodies, the one that has most of the old, original stuff off of my car, and low and behold, presto-change-o, there is my solution! The old seals from the headlight actuators! It fits the rod nice and snug, and it fits the hole in the front of the booster. I install the seal, and the old seal in front of that, as the master cyl. presses the seal against the booster, making a tight seal there. Start it up, and Wahoo! No mo vac leak(from there, anyway)!! Hey...my headlights will even go up now with the engine off! NOW we're cookin!
I didnt' get a pic of this fix, as I was just trying to find out if it would work. I'll snap a couple of it tomorrow...

While I was under the car changin the erl, I happened to notice that the driveshaft was turned just right to see the part # stenciled on it. So I figured I'd go ahead and snap a pic of it for posterity. I had forgotten all about it, and figured it was gone, or covered up by now, but there she were, all nice and purdy! It just reminded me of how many months of werk I put into restoring the chassis on this thing...that was back in 2000! Here it am, 8 years later, and all of it, except for the dirt on the frame, still looks just like it did when I finished it! Only some very minor surface rust on some stuff...nothing that won't wipe off, which I will do later this week.

Anywho, I gots Mama's '85 ready to go, except for cleaning the insides, and washing the outside. Just a few more things to do on the '74 and it'll be time to start packin them down with junk for the trip!
Are we there YET?

I had the same issue last spring. I ordered the replacemnet and when I got it, it leaked too. Good thing I know plastics and could fix the new one without having to go through the crap of sending it back. I would have tried to fix the old one but age has away of making plastic brittle.

Check the new one before you install it.

BTW, you have it upside down.

Only in the pic!
This is the original vap sep for my car...not a new one. I do have an extra one, but it has one of the attaching "ears" broken on it.
We'll see how well my patch job holds up in a few days...
