I just used a u-haul for a one way trip from Branson, MO. to Wichita, KS area. I did the drop off and the total cost was $140. As for gas usage. My GMC, while pulling, used 12.2 MPG on the back roads (@65)and 13.7MPG on interstate (@72MPG). ok, now on the return keeping the same speeds and same roads. I averaged 21.2 MPG and that's with a 4X4 truck. Love my truck, and hauling a trailer back would not have paid off for me and my truck. That said gas bill was about $135 for 600 mile round trip. Just to let you know I have paid almost $800 in tow bills for this rebuild...might have gotten a cheap used trailer and then resold it...hind sight!?

Vette(s): 1982 C3 Collectors Edition 44000 miles, sat in the sun most of its life, My wife purchased it for me for Father's Day in 2007 from her girlfriend that had it for 19 years. It is on the road again. I'm retired but it is now my daily driver.
I just looked up Grayhound on the web they have a web only price of $136.50 not bad as it most likely would cost you something around that if your drove a trailer one way.

Downside is it is a 24 hour trip by bus.  Leaves phoenix at 11:15AM and gets into Twin Falls at 12:10PM.

Of course the last 7 years I was working I was normally on an airplane flying somewhere that took 19 to 28 hours to get there at lease once every 3 months.  Just some more info for you.

looks like grayhound (hell hound) is the way i may be going. then driving the car home. need to fix the manifold gaskets first though- not sure if it will handle the trip with the chatter they make.

wow, craigslist posting turned out some interesting results....
a couple of hippies that "420" and will be pannhandling part way.
an ex military person
but the wife is extremely uncomfortable due to the area and the amount of "coyotes" that bring illeagles a crossed the boarder  and individuals that take you for what your worth then dispose of you at their convenience.
So unless i find a reputable ride ill be taking the 28 hour gray hound ride back
