Can anyone share some advice on what collector car insurance company has the best plan and for what reasons.

I'm hoping to get the '68 within the next 2 weeks.

Good and bad experiences are welcome.

Thanks,

Anthony

There was a thread started by me in the general discussion about collector insurance. A lot of good info there.

Whom ever you chose - be aware of - yearly milage restrictions, deductible, agreed amount $ value of auto, restrictions as to where and how stored, alarm systems
Company should be a reliable - well established company
Some even offer road side-breakdown coverages - be carefull of who has say as to towing (how towed -hopefully flatbed), how far and repair shops
You the owner/driver want the choice - not the ins company

Bunch of "good" (?) companies out there....

As someone ele stated be aware of the restrictions...AND
ask questions... I mean pointed.. direct.. questions.

Can I drive this car 75 miles to "visit" my brother
on a nice Sunny Sunday afternoon...?? I had more then one company say... NO.... that was pleasure driving... and as such was not covered... WTF ? Hargerty was among those couple of comopanies who told me this...

I use American Collectors ... and will continue to use them since they handled my one and only claim quickly, fairly, and professionally, and more important HASSLE FREE...

But ask a lot of questions...get a clarifacation on stated value and just what that means...

Good to hear you have American Collectors. That's who I went with.
My only problem now is that I am restricted to 2000 miles per year and I am going to surpass that about half way down to Bowling Green in a few weeks.
Am I taking a chance that if I have a misshap, I won't be covered? |frown|

I called American Collectors BEFORE I took my 72 on the
National Caravan in 1999.... for that very same reason...
(I would surpass the 2500 mile limmit somwehere on the trip...)

They ok'ed the trip .... no additional charge that I can remember...

Give them a call...better be save then sorry....

OR disconect the speedometer cable while you are on the trip...(could not resist adding that...like I'm sure you never thought of that solution...lol )

Everyone, Thanks for your input. Here are the answers to a list of questions that I sent to hagerty yesterday.

Silver69......Please direct me to your thread.

Thanks,,,,,,,,,,Anthony

-------------------------------------------
Hello Anthony!

Thank you for your email inquiry. I am going to answer your questions in the same order in which they appear below.

1- Do I need an appraisal to verify the car's value?
1. Appraisals are not a requirement to obtain coverage with us. However, there are a couple of different circumstances that they would be requested by our underwriters but only to establish an agreed value. We would need them if the vehicle to be insured is a modified vehicle in excess of $50,000 or if the value requested of the vehicle is above and beyond what we can justify for that type of vehicle from any valuation reference that we have available.

2- Mileage Restrictions?
2. Our policy is not mileage restrictive; however, it is a limited use policy. We do not limit you to just show and club use. Occasional pleasure driving fits our underwriting guidelines, but our policy is not intended for vehicles regularly driven to work or school or for running errands. We look for usage that is consistent with owning a valuable automobile and the availability of insured regular use vehicles for daily transportation.

3- When is the car not covered for theft / damage?
3. All quotes provided are for full coverage, annual policies that include "other than collision" coverage that will protect your vehicle against damages arising from fire, theft, vandalism, windstorm and much more. Providing that you had a full coverage policy in place with us, theft and damage of your vehicle would be covered at all times unless you were intentionally disregarding our program's guidelines.

4- Is there a copy of your standard policy available for review?
4. We can provide a copy of our policy for your review prior to obtaining a policy with us. To receive a copy, please call our office as we need to receive some initial information from you to be able to send a sample.

5- Is there an added cost for the Protection Network?
5. Membership in our Hagerty Protection Network costs $15 per year in addition to your annual premium. If you received a quote online, the total in the quote reflects that additional (but optional) charge. Effective October 4, we will have additional membership packages to offer to you as well at an additional cost.

You asked great questions! If you have additional questions, please feel free to call our office at (800)922-4050 and any one of our friendly agents will be happy to assist you. We are open Monday - Friday 8:30am - 8pm, Saturday 8:30am - 4pm and Sunday 12pm - 4pm (EST). Thank you!

Just a bit of additional info on Hagerty. I've had my '72 insured by them for a few years. In 2003 I wanted to take it on the Hot Rod Power Tour...but the policy stated limited pleasure driving...and must be kept in a locked garage at night. I sent them an e-mail explaining what I wanted to do, where we would be going, and that the car would be parked in hotel parking lots (not in a locked garage) at night.

I received an e-mail back from then stating that the car WOULD be covered on such a trip....that there would be no problem with the miles (over 3,000 total) and that the car would be covered while parked at the events and at night at the hotel. They even added, don't worry and enjoy the trip.

Fortunately I made the complete trip (2003 Long Hauler) with no problems...and didn't have to make a claim.

Well I called American Collectors this AM and told them I was going to BG for the big C3 event and that this little trip of 1500 miles would put me over the limit.
Amy said no problem. Just send them some proof that I actually went there (fax or e-mail receipt) and change my policy from 2500 miles to 5000 miles. She even offered to make it effective today.
And they will send me an invoice for the extra miles.
She guessed it would be an additional 30% or about $80.00. Boo! |frown|
Better safe than sorry though.
Now I can drive some more before the snow flies. |bouncy|

Things change.....In 1999 when I drove my 72 on the National
Corvette Caravan Am.Collectors extended my coverage at no additional charge...

I still think 80 bucks is dirt cheap however an you will be able to sleep better....we never worry about our own driving..its the 17 yo talking on his or her cell phone that
cuts us off...

Enjoy your trip.
