Hey Guys.

I'm in a unique situation with my Vette. Its insured as a normal car through my parent's company in my mom's name, and she almost drives it more than I do. However, with it being continually broken she doesn't get much seat time. I want to bring the car to NJ and have it in the parking deck at school so I can work on it. Thinking that I'll pull the interior and replace what is broken in there (heater core, gauges, wiring harness, etc). Since the parts can be stored in my dorm room and the car won't be any more vulnerable to theft than otherwise. I know that Geico will not insure the car up here, and having it here for more than picking me up or dropping me off is a violation of contract (go figure). So I'll need an insurance company that will insure against theft and damage by someone else while the car is undrivable in an open garage. The only thing I can think of that is going to help the cause is that the garage has a police force in the basement, is monitored by cameras and is closed to outsiders. Oh yeah...I'm 22. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just for my reference here are links to all past threads on insurance that I could find.

Scott,

Gieco is now licensed to operate in NJ as of a couple of months ago.

I just upped with Hagerty, but as a limitd use "garaged" car.

Many Collector Car Insurance companies offer policies for cars under restoration at an agreed value.

Try giving Grundy or Hagerty a call, worse they can say is no.

Good luck,

Anthony

Farm Bureau Ins. offers a classic car insurance that gives full coverage. There are no stipulations on where the car is stored. They will need pictures of the car and the milage. They do stipulate that the vehicle can not exceed 2000 miles a year. (Although they don't require yearly verification) Cost for my 76 is a whopping $120.00 a year. I am not sure if part of the cost is based upon my age (46) and multicar ownership (4 with vette). I don't believe it is factored in. |thumb|

I just switched the 'family fleet' back to American Family after having been with MetLife for 10 years or so. Cut my total premium in about half (including full coverage on "The Toy"). |biggrin|

I'll double check but I think the only restriction on "The Toy" was not to drive it to work.

I have Geico for my insurance, including on the Vette, which is presently just storage insurance. However I will change the vette next spring. Geico only insures for the "Book" value, but can't seem to tell me what that is.

Collectors insurance will be rough for me. They require a locked garage, and I have no garage. (I do have a lock). Any thoughts? |headscratch|

Tuxbla says that Farm Bureau Ins. offers insurance no matter where it is stored. This is my problem right now since I really just want storage insurance so I can bring the car to school and work on it, but I'd be working in a guarded parking deck. Eric76 parks his in a parking deck but I don't remember offhand which company he uses. Orangebb72 (Carl) seems to be very knowledgable about insurance, in the business if I remember correctly.

Ken, if you get all the premits and such I'll come out for part of a summer and help you build a locked garage
|biggrin|

About Gieco's insurance, I was once told that my 1975 was insured for a whopping $1800 book. Makes me very nervous knowing that because I've got about 10x that in the beast.

$1800.???? I have more than that in mine! That's insane!

Now I know I need to check around. Even for storage.

Building the garage would be fun. I need to check into the permits, cost, etc. I don't know if I have enough room for the city to permit the building.

well you have a few things going against you...

Your age..(but it must be nice to "feel" 22)
The Title has your moms name on it
A public parking deck is not exactly secure...

I would get it titled in your name...

Then I would look for a garage to rent ...around here they rent for about 100 bucks a month..
You woulkd be suprised at the number of available garage spaces that are available...

I would then contact Insurance companies and see what they would hit you for insuring the car both drivable and with out road coverage since you will be working on it...
