Vette(s): 1972 Targa Blue, T-Top, Saddle leather, 350 auto, numbers match, all original except '69 factory side exhaust. Previously owned: 1969 427, 390hp, 4sp, Riverside Gold coupe, factory side exhaust

Might be.  It's an early Firestone radial on a rally wheel.  1973 was the first year they put radials on Vettes.Thumbs%20Up  I'm sure someone else has more specific info.

There should be a date stamp on the rim - that could at least identify the rim as original - or not . Try the manufacture's code on the tire - perhapes firestone can help you there

I believe the Firestone Steel Radial 500s (QRZ) were offered sometime mid-year in production, so I would say I don't believe it is.

In '73, there was the Goodyear "Steelguard" radial, and the Firestone "Steel Radial 500", both available in blackwalls, or raised white letters.
The tire you show is not a 500, so it was is not an original tire from the factory, but...it may be the replacement tire. The Firestone 500 was recalled in '73(&'74 too). so this could be a replacement. Is it a GR70-15?

Original "500" tires for '73, up until around June of '73, had the raised, white tri-angle with the stylized "F" in the center, right after the name "Firestone" on the tire.

Check the date on the tire...on the back side, you should see what appears to be an embossed alpha-numeric series(usually 11 characters total).
Starting from the left, and going right, the characters mean:
1. Maker's code- M = Goodyear V = Firestone
2. Plant location
3rd & 4th position = Tire size code
5th thru 8th position = Tire line, and Type code
9-10 = Week of year produced
11 = Year produced(last number of year)

Not all positions were actually used, for all tires, so yours may not have 11 positions...

The real answer to your question, tho, is...it doesn't appear to be the factory issued tire for a '73 Corvette.

I just looked at the other pic...that's the same tire my '74 had on it(Firestone 721)...they are the replacement tires from the recall. Mine are not white lettered tho...they are blackwalls. Adams' Apple2008-03-12 19:40:24

Thanks guys. The reason I asked is becuase I have a guy that wants to buy it. I told him what you said and he still wants it so I will sell it to him. I just did not want to misrepresent anything.

I looked at some more of the pics you have of it, Brian, and I noticed the tire still had the tag on the tread...another indication it was not a factory installed tire.
The tire would pass Judging standards, tho, as the originals were recalled, so most are gone. If a judged car has a correctly sized, Firestone branded tire that was available at the time, it would be accepted with no penalties.
I hope you get paid what it is worth.

He is giving me what I asked for so I am happy.
I am happy to see  it going to a guy that has a need more then just a spare. My car is never going to be judges for originality so there is no need for me to keep it.
Thnks agian for the wisdom of this great site.

Due to it's age, this tire is probably not safe to drive on, unless it's not going any farther than on and off the trailer.  I hope the buyer understands that.

I believe he only wants it for "judging" reasons, not to drive on. From what I have seen or read, most of the guys only put the old tires on for NCRS judging. Then they switch abck to newer tires and wheels to drive on.Redwingvette2008-03-13 09:25:52
