Has anyone tried,or thought of switching any light bulbs out with the LED bulbs?

yeah, i tried it on the tail lights, but it was a big dissapointment. never really looked right. the led lights do not fill the tail lens enough to make it look good. youd have to find one that has them set on angles from the outdside egde to the center to mimic the light pattern of a regular bulb.

youre better off finding hi intensity standard bulbs. theyd look better i think

You can buy halogen 1157 bulbs from JC Whitney for your tail lights. They are about double the wattage of standard 1157 bulbs. I have them in my cars and they are definitely much brighter. They run about $10 per bulb, which is certainly not inexpensive, but I figure if it makes my car more visible to another driver when braking or running at night, it's worth it.

I can only speak from my experience, and I've had the halogen bulbs in my '69 and '78 for about two years now with no problems. The halogen 1157 bulb has a much smaller glass bulb than the standard 1157 does, so it isn't as close to the plastic lens. Whether that makes any difference , I don't know. You're not supposed to actually touch the glass on the halogen bulbs to keep skin oils from creating hot spots on the bulb and causing premature failure. The bulbs come with some foam to handle them with.

I can say my experience with them has been positive.

With respect to using LEDs.  We are starting to use them more at work (nuclear power plant control room..) because they use less power and produce a fraction of the heat that a regular bulb does.  We have purchased from www.superbrightleds.com and they have a pretty good product.  If anyone is interested I can provide a list of LED vendors.  I'm going to redo my dash lights with LEDs when I get to that point.  We've had bulbs in constant use for 2-3 years now without failing.  The manufacturer told us we should be able to get 80-100,000 hours of use out of the bulbs before they fail.

There is a post on one of the forums (might be another discussion group.. Embarrassed )  about somebody who put LEDs in his dash.  There are some pictures along with it that look pretty good.  I don't remember where I saw it....
