Vette(s): Silver 1974 Convertible - L82 4 speed Low miles (was only 8,900 when I bought it in March 2006) - Now 54K miles. Original owner bought it as an investment for son's college expenses. 2008 Jetstream Blue Convertible
The driver's side latch for the convertible top on my 74 is not staying latched with the top closed.  I've only had the car seven months, but this issue has only been happening for the last month or so.  If I latch it first, it is tight, but once I latch the right side and the center latches, the driver's side one falls down.  Any ideas?

It's an issue in that I worry the top isn't tight, but also because it really hurts when it falls just as I'm leaning over to roll down the window!  It's also just a general pain in the a$$!
Thanks!

Marshall, I'm not very smart when it comes to 'vertible tops, but you may want to look at the little rubber "pads" on the end of the latch, the one that actually touches the windershield header and makes it latch. If the rubber is deformed, or torn/worn, it won't hold tension, and the latch will "flop" itself open when you latch the other two latches. It sounds like the other two are making the top fit tighter than the driver's side latch, so when you latch them, it create a bit of slack in the driver latch, causing it to just fall open. The rubber pad should be adjustable, so if it's not damaged/mashed flat, you should be able to raise it up a bit, to put more tension on it. Hope this helps.

Then agin...i may not know s@#t from shinola, either!!
Does your top even have these parts? I know the center latch does, but I don't remember if the side latches do... You may just need to loosen off on the center latch a wee bit.

Well, I did some more inspecting and found that it's not the latch at all!  The pin on the top itself is loose, so when it gets in there and the other two latches are tight, the pin moves, loosening the latch!  Who'd have thought that anything could have gotten loose on a car after only 32 years!?!?
Now I just need to figure out exactly where it should be so I can tighten it.  It does have a peculiar bolt head.  I used a 7mm socket to move it, but clearly that's not the right size...

I wonder if this is common in all verts? Mine also has the same problem on the left side. But for me, that's WAY down on the repair listTongue!
