Back the screw up about three rounds and then bump the end of the screwdrive with the heel of your hand. That's push the metal back in and you can tighten the screw.

Little trick taught to me by my friend Rick who is the best interior/stereo guy around... Any delicate screws ie:interior, use your finger tips, not your hand or fingers to tighten. If it gets too much you prob went to far...
Most of the ones I find bad are the ones that hold the door pull strap or arm rest.
You are right KeBo, most people use too much force on delicate parts.
