Yes I have, all you have to do (in my case) is go to your insurance agency and bond a title, they will know what you are talking about. basically they provide a bond for the title and the title company (sec of state) makes you a new title. As long as no one ever comes back on the car and says its stolen you are ok.
Your insurance company can better explain it. There are probable other ways but this worked great for me.

Bought a volkswagon years ago and like cj5 stated earlier, you get a title bond which at that time was around $50.00. If some one came up and claimed the car, you would have to give up the car but the insurance company would reimburse the price you paid ( I think ) is the way it works. Someone correct this if I'm wrong
"Google" "Vehicle Title Services" and you will find several reputable companies that will get you a Title for the car. It is a real Title and they search public records for stolen vehicles prior to mailing the replacement Title. I have used then before with no problem.

Thanks guys i'm going to take the pencil trace of the vin up to sos tommorrow and if they still can't do anything i'll try the bond thing.know any agents in michigan.
Be very careful using any Title Service. In many states they are not recognized as a legitimate means for obtaining a title. If you are not able to find your title, or get a bonded title, you can file in your local circuit court for a declatory judgement. You will have to explain the circumstances and provide evidence that you legally possess the vehicle. The judgement forcs the DMV to issue you a title without recourse. This avoids anyone coming back later and saying that you took the car from their property.
