It is SOOOO refeshing to read comments that other owners would actually rather drive our prized possessions than let them sit. Being in northern Illinois, I don't get to drive my '73 nearly as much as I think it should be driven. I've spent almost six years (and WAY too much money) to let it collect dust in the garage -- or worse, stay clean under a cover so I can't even see it. The only thing that I haven't done is detail the frame. It's been in 12 judged shows and I have 12 trophies to show for it. Five times I've lost 1st to a guy with an absolutely immaculate '68 trailer queen. I'm not saying he's anal retentive, but at the end of the shows he actually puts the floor mats in plastice bags and takes off his shoes to drive "queenie" the 150' back to her trailer. If that's what it takes to get 1st place, I'll be happy to settle for 2nd and at least drive the trophy home in the seat next to me!

My 72 has 34K showing, based on the general condition underneath the car, it looks to be accurate. Unfortunately I have not driven this car much at all after getting it in '88. Not by choice, but due to family situations.

Anyway, once I finsih the brakes and other small details I'm looking forward to put some serious mileage on this puppy. ( or as least as much as I can under collector car insurance.!!)

Amen Brother!!!

the guy I bought mine from said it had 69K and some change when he replaced the speedo... and forgot to adjust the odomoter until he was too far into it.

I bought it with 400 NEW speedo miles on it.. now it has 1034.. (but ive only had it 6 mos and most of that time it wasnt drivable..) once i get a new tranny in it... im gonna start driving to some shows...

I plan to rack those miles up..

enjoy it while your here.. you could die from a heart attack tommorrow

Norske, I asked him that... They're filled with nitrogen!!!

It's what they use for a lot of museum cars..

OK, I've been debating whether I'd reply to this thread. The 64 and 78 Vettes mentioned at the top? It's too late to start driving either one. They should both be preserved as original. My opinion. Now, should I start driving MY 78 L82 Pace Car? 25.7 miles. Bought it with no intention of driving it. As an investment, but I have no intentions of EVER selling it. I just like having it in new condition. It is maintained religiously, fluids changed, stored up off the tires, etc. It still has the original non-stainless brake calipers(never leaked), brakes flushed regularly. I prefer to drive the 79 4speed when the urge strikes, and sometimes my wife will follow in the 78SA to a show or cruisenite, but that gets to be a hassle. I don't have a lot of time to just go cruising. I'm not retired with a healthy pension. I guess I'm just an a-hole who's not a car guy. |ohwell| Mike

Vette(s): 1975 C3 Red, T-Tops, Black Interior. All I need is time and money! Getting there!
I'm a firm believer is driving the cars. But I have a lot of respect for a car with very little miles in pristine, drivable condition. It's all in what you want. I would have to drive any car I owned, but one with less than 100 miles I would try to keep under that 100 miles mark.
The way I look at it, it depends on the situation for that car, and that person. There is no wrong way. BUT, I want to drive it!

Seems like we've come full circle on this topic..

Since I started it off.. let me put in my 2 cents, and maybe clear up some of the hostility toward thhis guy...

First of all, he about 70 (ish), and seems to be a really nice guy..

Second, he has had many vettes.. been there, done that, and has taught his sons to dirve the vetts at young ages... The stories are classic..

He alwways drove his vettes (a lot), but, as kstyer said, admired all the beautiful cars with low mileage....

So, he started collecting them. I think it's cool..

Oh, by the way, my 69 has 98,000 and counting rapidly...

And, I saw Joe (the guy with the pristine xettes) driving to the store in his 64.. Now it's got 247 miles.. HA HA..

Wish he'd get tired of them and let me take them off his hands,,,,

Thanks for more info on your neighbor Mike. He sounds like someone who has enjoyed life in general and enjoys Corvettes in particular. It is great to preserve true survivors, and it should be done. But to have them stored someplace where they rarely, if ever, get uncovered or shared with other automotive enthusiasts is still a crime IMO. If the car was bought as an investment its value isn't going to appreciate any less if it is on display in a public venue. No offense intended to anyone.
