I have a 1976 whose VIN matches the number stamped in the proper location on the engine block. However, there is a completely different number stamped on the transmission oil pan (right vertical surface of pan), and I can't find the number at all on the differential. Am I looking in the wrong spots on the transmission and the differential or do I have non-matching component systems??

Hi Bill,

I haven't actually spent a lot of time locating numbers on "The Toy" yet, but I know there are several places to look for direction on locating them. The Chilton's and Haynes repair manuals touch on a few of them, but the 'Corvette Restoration Guide 1968-1982' by Richard Prince has a lot of detail on where to locate numbers. The NCRS would be a good place to check with also.

Hi

The transmission should also have the cars VIN number stamped on it, same as the engine.
The rear end numbers are difficult to find.
I think, they are underneath the spring block.
I don't know if the VIN is stamped on the rear end as well.
To check if you have a correct numbers matching car, you also need to check the engine block's casting number and date. The stamped numbers are so easy to fake.

Good luck. Gunther
