Vette(s): 1968 convertable
A few months ago I bought a 68 conv.It does not have the original motor. The console tag says the motor is a 300 hp 350 ci. The books I have looked in show 68's have 327s or 427s. Is it possible for a 68 to have come from the factory with a 350. Does any one know where i could look to find out. The vin# is 194678s420659
Thanks

You're correct...'68's came with either a 327 or 427 engine. The console tag could have been replaced by someone in its history.

Are you sure it's actually a '68 and not a '69 registered as a '68? Does the car have the ignition switch on the dash or the steering column? Do the doors have pushbuttons to unlock the outside or simply flush key locks? '68's have the ignition switch on the dash...'69 the switch was moved to the steering column. The '68's had pushbutton locks, the '69's had flush key locks.

Check these out and let us now.

Vette(s):
SOLD - "The Toy" - '70 Convertible
SOLD - "The Beast" - '90 ZR-1 (#682)
SOLD - "Betty" - '28 Ford Model A Tudor
SOLD - "BLKBRRD" - '78 Pontiac Trans Am
"BLUBYU" - '04 Coupe
A couple of other subtle differences between '68s and '69s:

'68s - no Stingray logo on the fenders, 7" wide wheels
'69s - Stingray logo on the fenders, 8" wide wheels

The VIN number should be the true teller if you're confident that it hasn't been tampered with. Using the VIN Decoder on the 'Tools' tab here's what your VIN returned:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Your VIN Report:

Division (1): Chevrolet
Car Line (9467): Corvette Convertible
Model Year (8): 1968
Plant (S): St. Louis, MO
Sequence Number: 420659
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Based on that I'd have to guess that the original engine (probably a 327, Big Blocks had some beefier suspension parts as well) has been replaced. If you can find some serial numbers on the engine that might help to figure out where it most likely began its life.

I may be able to help you. I will check the parts numbers when I get home from school. It is probably not the original engine. Talk to ya later

It does have pushbuttons on the doors and the ignition switch is in the dash. So it must be a 68. Thanks for the info on motor sizes for this year model

Hi

68 Vettes had no console tag with engine info.
Your console must be a later one, 69 and up type.
