My 78 pace just turned 25 so I went to njdmv to get app.for antique plates(so I don't have to inspect,I will never let inspection station destruction crew touch car). After waiting 30min at info desk they told me I have to call special plates no.(they don't have the forms)I called them,20 min.wait, they told me(dmv office has forms) I can get classic inspection sticker,no inspection, with my standard plates just have to register as classic car 25 year or younger, antique plates only older than 25.They also said I need classic car insurance(have) and just drive car less than 3000mi year(car hasn't been driven that much 25 years)But he said I might have to put "lock on odem"what is this?To make a longer story short does anyone know the real story of classic/antique plates in NJ,how to get.THANKS-Bill |bouncy|

i used to live in NJ so i understand how the inspection system works there (its a PIA). i never had antique tags there and dont know how they work in NJ but i have good friends still there that would know. they have been involved in antique cars in NJ for 50 years and own a restoration shop. 609-953-5768 talk to joe or either of his sons dave or mike. joe ownes a fully restored 53 Kaiser darren. 1 of 300 built Kaisers answer to the corvette, it's also made of fiberglass and a 2 seater.. mike has a C3 corvette convertible 4 speed. i beleive he wants to sell. as well as a ton of old chevys 57, el Camino big blocks. Anyway i had many frustrating times with the NJ inspection. failed once because my turn signal blinked too fast. As far as the speedometer lock, they want to be sure you don't exceed their limit for driving over 2500 miles, it seems kind of extreem to make you do that but with the high cost of insurance in NJ i guess some people drive old beaters and put antique tags and insurance on them to drive to work. my insurance droped by more than 60% when i moved to Florida.

Bill, I just got QQ plates for my '71 LT-1. You must go directly to the motor vehicle agency in Trenton. Check this link: http://www.state.nj.us/mvs/dmvphone.htm and get phone #. Ask for info on how to get to the proper agency for historic plates. Take a copy of your title, insurance info, and several pictures front, and side. They don't keep the pics. I think that there are 2 agencys there but only one processes QQ's. Good Luck

Dave S.
