When I bought my '72 coupe in '99, the previous owner had installed 235R60-15s all around. I subsequently replaced the somewhat worn 235s with BF Goodrich Radial TAs in the same size, which I love. I think these wider tires work great, but there is one drawback---the 235 size won't fit into the spare tire carrier.

The result? I'm riding around without a spare, and a can of "Fix-A-Flat" courtesy of the local auto parts store, just like the C5s, which are issued with what Chevy calls their "Flat tire repair kit" (it consists of a can of fix-a-flat, but GM probably charges twice as much at their parts counters). Anybody else in the same situation? Wonder if anybody will come with runflats in the 15 inch size? Probably not, it's considered an obsolete size.

Scott

I don't think I can put one of my wider 255s in the tub either, but I have a tire in there. Its to worn to be used, but I heard it was best to have something in there incase of an accident or something!!

I have 245 60 15 on mine and had a spare tha twas smaller. Something like a 215 70 15. This would be pretty useless unless a real emergency was there. I blew the rear last fall and while replacing it left the entire tube assembly out. It looks better and I dropped a few pounds for racing. I carry a can of Fix A Flat now.

Hi
My 68 has no spare tire carrier. The back looks much better without.
Also, if you have a flat in the back, you must install the exact same tire size ( diameter ) , otherwise the posi is ruined after a couple of miles due overheating.
If you run the same tires all around, of course a front tire can be used and the different spare can be installed in the front. Needs carefull driving and only to get home or to the next garage.
Also my car isn't a daily driver and if the can of fix a tire doesn't help, I call the automobile club to carry my car home. As I'm a member, this is free of any extra charges for twice a year.
Never, ever, I will leave the car alone . A GSM Phone is a must.

Holy Cow I can't believe I forgot to look at the spare! I've only seen it once, and that was about a year ago. I suppose I'd better take a look and see what I've got. Thanks for the reminder and the tips. |smile|

I run over-size tires also. My spare carrier has only half of the tread in the the nut. I guess the pressure from the tire against the holder is acting like a lock washer. Anyhow, bottom line is, that is the way I got the car. If the nut hasn't worked it's way loose by now, it won't. Now, having said that, no doubt on my next trip to the store I will be chasing my spare down the street and |cussing| about it.

Hey Glenn---what wheels are you running, and do you require spacers with them to clear the calipers?

I also run oversized tires...and my ''spare'' (I think) is the original tire!!!! I dunno!! I have NEVER had it off!! Guess maybe I should check to see if it is any good...probably not!!!!...not that it would do me any good!!! If I have a flat (especially on the back)...would have to call a get a flat bed !!

I have two divergent thoughts on this:

1. the spare doesn't have to be as wide as the others, just the same diameter to preserve the posi. A 70 or 75 series tire is fine, and will fit in the carrier.

2. I can't remember the last time I got a flat. (knock on wood)
