Hi
Thought, I had my 68 ready for the road and finally passed this stupid bi-yearly inspection ( failed the firts time due to side pipes too loud |cussing| ), but |hammer|
During todays cruise, I noticed a water streak behind my car. The radiator is leaking again. |cussing|
Got it fixed already a little over 1 year ago.
So i pulled it out of the car and it's leaking from the drivers side collector box. Looks like light pudery corrosion between the sheets where they are soldered together, about 1 inch long.
Same happend 1 year ago and that place is still OK after they fixed it.
What's wrong here, am I using the wrong anti-freeze liquid ?
Is it possible , that the cap pressure relief is set too high ?
Damn, I don't feel like pulling this radiator once a year. |ick|
Any thoughts.
Gunther

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.
sorry to hear about your radiator problems. Maybe it is about time to invest in a new radiator. I know they are extremely expensive, but which is worse, repair once a year, or replace it. Good luck

Gunther,
You have ( in my humble opinion ) an extremely sharp looking ride. I think if I had to go to the trouble of removing the radiator for repair, I would just go ahead and replace it, probably with aluminum. I will be pulling my radiator when I eplace the engine this year and if finances will allow, I will be going for aluminum ! |rollysmile|
BTW , thanks for the e-mail about the chrome gills. Ther eis a NOS set of aluminum out there now, but for the bid price, ya might as well by from Ecklers |smile|

Hi
Yes, you'r right. I should replace it.
But due to cost and time , I opted to attempt an other repair.
It's already back in the car and OK, drove it already extensively.
If it gives up again, I will go for a new one, or may be during winter anyway.
The guy from the radiator repair shop told me not to take a alu one if it's not a daily driver.
He thinks that alu would corrode much more than copper if not driven daily.
By the way, my big block radiator is a GRIFFIN copper radiator with a pressure cap ( no overflow tank ).
Could this be the original ( 30 + years old ), or is it already a aftremarket unit ?
Thanks Gunther

If my buddy brings his '68 to the meeting on Tuesday, i will look at his. I think it is an original radiator. Hmmm, looking at my post back to you, ( above ), suddenly my pic is not there???

Thanks,
I removed the radiator without removing the hood.
Brought it to the shop yesterday morning and got it back in the afternoon.
The core was ok, the soldering on the left box flat side came loose.
They repaired it for 25 US$ ( 28 Euro ) , pressure tested it and repainted it to zero hours. |laugh|
They also pressure tested the cap on my request and it's releasing OK.
Yesterday evening, I extensively drove the car and all seems to be OK for right now.
If it's leaking again, I will get a new one.
Thanks for the offer, might come back to you on this sooner or later.
