According to the Corvette Black Book, in 1981 there was only one production car sold that was painted # 24, Bright Blue Metalic.
Could this be true?
Was the color so ugly that only one person liked it?
Was it painted at St. Louis or Bowling Green?
I can't believe there was only one. Who ordered it?

Appears to be true.

You've got me on that one. I've not seen the car.

Black Book says it was a St. Louis car.

You're kidding, right?
Bright blue came back for '82 although the color might be slightly different. The 80-82 NCRS Judging Manual might have something to say about 81 bright blue metallic and why it was apparently used only once. COPO is not out of the question.

'68 one "Spec/primer"
'76 one Dark Green
'77 one Chartreuse
'81 one Bright blue
There have been several years with only one car painted a non-standard color. One would assume they were ordered for a high-up in GM management, or a valuable dealer. GM would NOT have painted just one production car a specific color as a test to see how it looked...
There were some cars painted in St. Louis as "test" cars for certain colors/types of paint, usually 5-10 cars. There were some cars painted in enamel in St. Louis in 1980(with an "E" in the paint code), even tho most folks think all of the enamel cars were BG cars....

I was thinking a special color for the Corvette GM or some VP.
That would make perfect sense.
Now if I can just find the rare bird.

I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

I checked the NCRS 80-82 Judging Guide last night. It lists #24 Bright Blue Metallic as being a legitimate color for 1981, but says nothing concerning why apparently only one car was painted that color.

Metal Man,
Is that the original color, #28, Dark Blue?
Or has it been repainted?
Joel,
According to my Bl Book, 1968 had 1 non-standard (pink).
1972 had some non-standard and primer only.
Ditto 1975.
Ditto 1976 plus one Dark Green Metalic.
1978 had more painted than sold! 16 had primer only.
1979 has 15 in primer only.
1980, no primer but special colors sold.
1982- 9 had primer.
So, pick a color and have it painted what you like.
