I have a 77 with the original "Classic White" paint. I assume it is laquer. Code is 10L. It has previously had some custom pinstriping done. I think it was when the car was fairly new. The colors (Red and Blue) have faded pretty bad. (the red is now almost pink) I am planning to repaint over the old stripes to bring the color back, and preserve the original paint. How can I tell if the stripes were also laquer, and what should I use to repaint them? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Going back about twenty years, "custom" pin-striping (i.e. hand painted, not transfer taped) was always done in laquer in my neck of the woods. I would recommend re-doing them with laquer.
Why? Because laquer will stick to almost any finish. Enamels and polys won't.
Hope this helps.

You can get reaction between some chemicals found in different paints. Stick with the original. Straight enamel, which is not as common, would be okay. It also stays on almost anything. Most enamels are acrylic, and could cause problems. It has been enough years the reactions probably won't matter.
Adhesion is another question. You want to lightly scuff the old stripes without hurting the surrounding paint. You may have to tape them off, and lightly use a 3M pad. Use a good wax and grease remover. Stripe away!
