How are ya guys? I need some HELP here; I was just wonderering what the benifits of upgrading my ignition, distributor(etc). The stock parts in my vette(1980,4-speed;pretty much stock) are allright,(no problems),but was just wondering the benifits of upgrading to maybe MALLORY DIST. MSD-IGNITION;so on. Whats the good of it all,and what can I expect from the change, besides a little lighter in the pocket.    Freddie shady802007-03-06 02:47:44

Well, I will tell you what a good friend of mine told me that fine tunes all my cars, races his (2) Chevy's and is a Master Mechanic.

You will get better performance out of the MSD as he loves the product.  The '80 distributor is just that - 26 years old.  You can get as fancy as you want with the distributor and the add ons they have, but we dropped in a regular MSD distributor along with the new crate engine, etc. and the car purrs ike a kitten, runs like a bat out of hell, and my mpg has gotten much better, 8.5 with no emissions left on it prior to swap to 12.5 with my foot in it moderately.  I have a stock '81 other than what I have done, 3 spd manual, etc.

Alot of that probably has to do with the crate, but I have another money pit, non-Chevy with the MSD distributor and that car is great.  Never a lick of trouble, runs great, gets great mpg, etc.

I a nutshell, a new distributor will be just that, new versus 26 yrs old.  I am a parts changer - not a diagnostic guru as some of the other folks here are, but it was worth the cheese for me. LOL

The MSD ign. set-up is well worth the $$$ in most cases. Try to keep with the same manufacturer's components, and there should be no surprises.
An MSD will help get the car started quicker, and run a bit smoother, due to the way it works. They modules can sometimes be finicky...they need to be installed per MSD's instructions, or there might be some trouble.
I would heartily recommend staying away from Mallory stuff. It doesn't seem to be as dependable as it once was...
