Topic: Radio replacement !?!?!?
in Forum: C3 General Discussion
OK so i am not sure which post this one should be in but..............
How to replace the radio in your Corvette in 500 easy steps !!!
- Remove left rear muffler(or at least lower it)
- Remove spare tire
- Remove spare tire cradle and lid(liberally sprinkle face with dirt oil and grim)
- Remove passenger side dash panel(and be amazed how easy it is)
- Break arm in six places then remove drivers side dash panel (this is required to remove and install new speaker)
- Remove sill/rocker panel cover(go on see if you can get ALL the screws out in one go)
- Remove panels behind driver(once you figure out where all the screws are)
- Remove rear storage boxes (don’t forget to break the storage light while your at it)
- Lift carpet(and cover drivers seat in all sorts of crap)and remove rotted insulation from drivers footwell
- Remove center console and remove radio(that was easy)
See simple, OK so maybe, just maybe I took off some things I didn’t need to, but isn’t it amazing how a simple little project like replacing the radio can end up taking 2 or 3 weekends.
You see I won the radio on Ebay the price was good, then I had a minor issue with it which was fixed at not expense to me, so I decide well if I am putting in a new radio I MUST put in new speakers and of course while installing the radio I broke the aerial cord, it was so brittle when moved it snapped, so rather than put the same old aerial back I bought an electric one that is flush mounted, so now of course it all becomes clear as to why I removed so much ‘stuff’ and of course I had to clean and repaint the drivers side footwell (and yes now I will have to do the passenger side too and I have to buy new insulation too).
Also while floating around Ebay again I won a steering wheel and some carpet and a seat cover of course I’ll have to buy other bits to fit that lot as well.
Did I tell you how much I hate Ebay (OK maybe I don’t really) it gives me so much work to do.
Of course if anyone out there is about to embark on the same project I am more than happy to tell you what problems I hit.
radio/antenna/speakers! got a great new center bezel, and id
love to get a modern cd player in there. (not that i dont get a
kick out of the 8-track!)
how hard is it really to replace that power antenna? i have no
clue how to get at it to swap it out. mine probably hasnt worked
in a decade and a half, and it would be nice.
Hi Stevep316
Lets see :-
Remove left rear muffler(or at least lower it) and depending where your power cable connections and antenna connection is will determine how many panels/carpet behind the drivers seat has to be removed if you are really unlucky you will have to go all the way back to the center console, but if your lucky you may find the joins just inside the car, unfortunatley you are going to have to trace the wires to find the joins and the only way to do that is start removing from the antenna end and once you start you have to finish !
By the way I got antenna from Ecklers and I would say it is of reasonable quality (a case of you get what you pay for) and fine for my purposes.
If you would like further explanation just let me know.
Have fun
