Hey guys how do you replace a broken wheel stud in a 75 vette. I have the tire and rotor off now and I am all confused with the parking break setup on this car I have never seen anything like it. and it appears that my driver side is missing a few of the springs when compared to the passenger..

Since you can see the parking brake, apparently the rivets that are supposed to hold the rotor on are already gone. Now you can just press out the old stud and press in the new. A back yard method is to use a C-clamp with a socket straddling the head of the stud to press it out, and a deep socket over the threads to put the new one in. As long as you have them apart, there are complete stainless steel parking brake hardware kits, or you can figure out what is missing and buy just the needed parts.

Dante, if you plan on keeping the vette for a great length of time...invest in the stainless steel parking brake kit........that's at least what I did.

You can also take a hammer and a steel punch and drive out the old/broken wheel stud, obtain a new one along with 2 new lug nuts and use an air impact to draw the new wheel stud up into the spindle with one of the new lug nuts. It usually doesn't draw it up completly so i've used a larger nut(or some washer's that allow the wheel stud splines to pass through) to get it flush with the back of the spindle. Guess the C-clamp will work too... :) oops, almost forgot, if you do use an air impact to do this, the nut that you use to draw up the wheel stud, be sure to dispose of it, as it really really stresses the threads on the nut, therefore the suggestion of getting 2 lugs... :) stingrayjim 2008-03-26 11:05:08
the hammer and punch method has at times warped the item.
