OK Gang I need some help. I have purchased a replacement rearview mirror for my 81. Even though it is supposed to be a direct replacement, the small tab that glues to the windshield is slightly different than the original. So to install the new mirror I need to get the old tab off the windshield and put the new one on. Has anyone got an idea to get this thing off without breaking or replacing the windshield??? I've tried slipping a razor blade behind it and cutting through the glue but it is tough!!! |grrr| Thanks for your help. Tom.

Is the new tab larger or smaller than the old one?

Vette(s): 1973 Coupe - was L82, auto, air, standard interior. Now has 1987 350 TBI, 700r4, 4:56, Fiero seats, new interior, PPG base/clear (BMW Hellrot Red), Alloy wheels, chambered exhaust, headers, small cam, interval wipers, cruise, front spoiler.
I don't know how to get it off without breaking the glass, but don't try knocking it off. I did this at the junk yard to get a mirror. I thought it would separate and leave the glue on the window. I pulled a chunk right out of the window, had to grind the glue & glass off when I got it home. I was surprised the glue was that good!

Dukman,
The new tab is slightly larger than the original.
Racer,
Thanks for the information. I'll put away the hammer and chisel. |wink|

OK, so the tab that is still on your windshield is smaller than the one that came with the new mirror, right? Does it have a allen set screw in the plastic piece(mirror) to secure to that tab?

don't quote me on this....
But isn't there some sorta spray that you can use to ''melt'' the old adhesive off??? ande then some sorta glue you use to reattached the new mirror?

Might want to check at an auto glass repair place?

Try some acetone around it. It may take a couple of applications, be sure to mark the position of the old mounting hard ware from the outside with a magic marker, so you can center the new one.

Maybe this will help click on url below.
Rare81 has a good idea. it may take acetone to dissolve the glue but make sure you use it sparingly and protect your dash and any plastic parts. and keep it away from your fiberglass.
You may want to use one of those small metal handled parts cleaning black bristle brushes to apply the solvent. http://www.diynet.com/DIY/article/0,2058,6574,00.html

I called a friend of mine who has his own glass replacement business and he had several suggestions.

1) Leave the existing mount on the windshield and simply glue the new one right on to it. It will leave a bit of a gap between the mirror base and the windshield, but it wouldn't be that noticeable (unless you're going through a NCRS judging).

2) Look for an adapter the would attach to the existing mount and then attach the mirror to the adapter. He said you should be able to find the right adapter at a good auto glass place.

3) Heat. Very, VERY carefully apply a torch to the existing metal mount. On one-onethousand, two-onethousand, off one-onethousand, on one-onethousand, two-onethousand, off one-onethousand. Do this two or three times and then very, VERY carefully apply a light amount of pressure on the mount with a pair of pliers. If it doesn't budge, do the heat sequence again. Be careful though as too much heat could crack the glass just as easily as too much pressure. He said he gets a lot of calls to replace mirrors in the summer time because as interior temps rise, the glue fails - clunk go the mirrors.

He said he uses a two part Locktite adhesive to put new mounts on the windshield that has been as good or better than the stuff from the factory. Again, consult with an auto glass place for what they would recommend.

Hope that helps. Good luck!
