I need to get the horn cap off my 82 vette. How does it come off the steering wheel? It's very loose now like there's nothing under it. I just picked up the car Sunday and the horn is not working.

Thanks,
Jon

Jon, first of all, welcome to the forum. Although I haven't taken my horn button off (havent needed to), there have been numerous posts on the subject. Grip it firmly and PULL straight off.  You may want to disconnect your battery just in case it decides to start working when the button comes off.

Sometimes it even pops off on it's own.

Thanks to all of you for your help. I thought it might but didn't want to break it. I have a GM service manual coming soon that I bought off EBAY. Clap

Welcome to the C3 Register. You will fine a wealth of helpful, eager people who want to help you here. When I got my '78, the horn button was "glued" on and there was a hot horn button screwed to the dash board.Thumbs%20Down...I installed a new horn kit and followed the instructions to the tee...but so far no positive results. So give us an up date on your progress please.

Jon, been awhile since I worked on my horn problem. I think on the problems I had with mine not working was the spring under the horn. I ordered the kit and rebuilt using the new parts, still no horn. I removed the old spring which was shot, could not fine another one so? I jury rigged a spring from a ink pin. Streched it out alittle bit droped it in and put back together and? It has worked ever since no problem. Kind of out there with the fix but it worked. Don't know if it will fix your but you mite check it out. Thanks

Thanks to all. I removed the horn cap and I found that the spring and brush had been stuck and was not making contact. I also noticed the horn contact mechanism had come apart. I think is a $19 part. Easy fix. Thanks again everyone for the help. jbs82vette2007-11-01 03:46:45
