Quite a number of years ago I helped a friend drive to the Boston area to transport a horse back to Minnesota. 27 non-stop hours each way. Thought I was going to lose my dentures going east through PA as the turnpike was such a mess. On the return trip we came across the New York Thru-way and then down through Cleveland. Much smoother road - at least back then. The scenery was different in each direction and equally as nice I thought.
Lots of folks along the way on either route. I'm sure they'll chime in here. Enjoy the ride...!!!
I have made this trip many times, not to Chicago - but as far as Toledo. I have tried both ways at different times over the years and find the better roads to be on the turnpikes.
I take the Mass Pike (Boston to Albany) to the NY Thruway (Albany to Buffalo), then through Erie, PA and finally into OH and pickup the Ohio Turnpike around Clevelend (either side). At times I have had a bit of road work through the little stretch in PA, but not unbearable.
The rest areas though NY have been redone over the past few years and are pretty nice. So, all in all - while a long ride - the roads have been pretty good.
Have fun and enjoy that new ride.
Getting nervous about the drive the longer I think about it. I have a beat up work van that I would drive that distance without thinking twice about it, but an 11K mile unfamiliar Vette is a different story. Will definitely be going through Ohio on route 80 so if Ken wants to email me a phone no. I'd be great to meet ya. Won't be near a computer. Looks like rain Mon. and Tues. too. Of course, this all hinges on buying the thing! Norsky, is the New York Thruway rt 90 that kinda follows the lakes? Looks a little too far north. Any thoughts on 84 to 81 to 80 going past Scranton? Would really like to avoid the New York City maze of roads. Bought a round trip air ticket and talked to my sis-in-law the car shipper just in case but really want to drive the thing. Mike

Summer is construction season, so there may be an occasional lane reduction.
If you take the Mass Pike to I84 south to I80, you will find delays because of the volume of cars heading to NYC. Same with I95.
I haven't been on I80 in PA recently, but many of the non-toll ways in PA are pretty bumpy.
Anyway, I hope the Vette turns out to be what you are looking for. Good luck.

If you travel the I-90 through Buffalo on to Rochester and have any mechanical problems, feel free to give me a shout. I will PM my # upon request.
