Recently went out to garage and took the cover off the 71 for the first time since December and noticed a lot of condensation moisture - everything under the hood and on suspension dripping wet. I spent weeks last spring redoing my front suspension.  It looked like new until winter hit and now all the nuts and bolts are starting to rust like mad.  I hate that.  I'm sure its just surface spotting but still dont like it.  The car is garaged and covered but I drive it regularly in better weather.  Today I put a tarp under it to help block moisture from coming up thru the asphalt floor.  Any other suggestions?

Thanks,  Neil

My car sits in the garage, covered, most of the winter - but I like to uncover it every week or so for a few days. I also open the garage doors and let a little sun and air in to circulate whenever I can. I know exactly what you're talking about because it's happened to me more than once. Not much you can do about it, unless you have a heated garage. Maybe someday ....

Hang in there - not much longer 'til spring!

My '74 sits constantly in the garage, under cover. I usually have a fan running, pointed under the car, just to keep the humidity (and spidie webs!) down in there. (I have a couple of the small fans like the tool guys sell) That works really well for me. Also, when I reconditioned the chassis & suspension, I used a rag moistened in clean motor oil to wipe down all the non-painted parts, like the drive & half shafts, nuts & bolts, etc. After that, I sprayed them with a product I use at the shop, called Zep 45. It works WAY better than WD-40 type stuff, but it leaves a really slick film on the surfaces after the 'spray' chemicals evaporate. I haven't had ANY rust form on any parts I treated like this. btw...I did all this work 4 yrs. ago!Adams' Apple38393.7693287037

Keeping air circulating is pretty important, humidity doesn't have a chance to settle. The coating sounds like an excellent idea too. I know I've been out in the shop after a few wet days and the floor and car are wet......... I suppose that's the biggest reason I'm trying to get the front garage done.

The surface rust should come off with a little rubbing with steel wool.

Man,am I ever appreciative for this thread.I am in the middle of restoring the front end, brakes etc. and these suggestions will help head off the rust.I use Zep45 every day and it is considered among our mechanics as very superior stuff, but I never considered this use for it. My car is in an unheated garage, with a sheet of plastic over the concrete, but moisture always makes its way in.Your suggestions will be a big help.

I''m not real worried about minor rust on my components, it's already there.  But it's surface rust.  All the components are good This summer I can get after it in earnest.  Once cleaned I will also use a coating.  I don't need a fan, the wind blows. ( That sucks )

I've got 3 "car capsules" running all winter long. Fans constantly circulate air through the capsule keeping all dry even on the wettest days. Leave the windows open to circulate air inside too, prevents mildew. I have found that I need to slide 10 or 12 2X4s under the basemat of the capsule to creat an air gap between it and the concrete, tho. Without the lumber, on really, really damp days the inside floor would get wet, but the Vettes still stayed dry. Just didn't like seeing water INSIDE the bag. Even so, the fan circulation would eventually dry the floor. They can be a pain for normal storage but for long term I love em.  Got a pic of the bubbles on my photos page, click "photos" and go to page 2.  Mike http://www.villagephotos.com/pubgallery.asp?id_=706755mkapp787938393.9570138889

Thanks guys I'll give the fans a try.  Will go to Pep Boys today to look for Zep 45.  Really appreciate all the suggestions.

Vette(s): 1972 coupe/350 cid/mild cam/4 spd/20 ft. paint (looks perfect from 20 ft.), but it sure runs nice.

Something that works pretty well for me is a product called Damp-Rid. I've got about four cups of this stuff set up around the garage. My tools were rusting right before my eyes almost. I live near the swamps in southern FL so you can imagine the humidity.
