Topic: Rusty suspension parts
in Forum: C3 General Discussion
Recently went out to garage and took the cover off the 71 for the first time since December and noticed a lot of condensation moisture - everything under the hood and on suspension dripping wet. I spent weeks last spring redoing my front suspension. It looked like new until winter hit and now all the nuts and bolts are starting to rust like mad. I hate that. I'm sure its just surface spotting but still dont like it. The car is garaged and covered but I drive it regularly in better weather. Today I put a tarp under it to help block moisture from coming up thru the asphalt floor. Any other suggestions?
Thanks, Neil
My car sits in the garage, covered, most of the winter - but I like to uncover it every week or so for a few days. I also open the garage doors and let a little sun and air in to circulate whenever I can. I know exactly what you're talking about because it's happened to me more than once. Not much you can do about it, unless you have a heated garage. Maybe someday ....
Hang in there - not much longer 'til spring!
Just imagin how KSTYERS looks,he does'nt have a garage to put his in just a cover on it out there in the back yard,BRRRR.it's to bad we could'nt all get together like the Amish ,and have a garage raising party for him.

Keeping air circulating is pretty important, humidity doesn't have a chance to settle. The coating sounds like an excellent idea too. I know I've been out in the shop after a few wet days and the floor and car are wet......... I suppose that's the biggest reason I'm trying to get the front garage done.
The surface rust should come off with a little rubbing with steel wool.

Man,am I ever appreciative for this thread.I am in the middle of restoring the front end, brakes etc. and these suggestions will help head off the rust.I use Zep45 every day and it is considered among our mechanics as very superior stuff, but I never considered this use for it. My car is in an unheated garage, with a sheet of plastic over the concrete, but moisture always makes its way in.Your suggestions will be a big help.

Something that works pretty well for me is a product called Damp-Rid. I've got about four cups of this stuff set up around the garage. My tools were rusting right before my eyes almost. I live near the swamps in southern FL so you can imagine the humidity.
