Yesterday I attended a show hosted by the Santa Clarita Valley Corvette Club. (they are listed in our club directory) It was a very nice show, although it was 107 degrees out. I also met one of our new members, Backn73. He has a beautiful red 73 T-top. Come on out to Cruise for the Cure ,Rob.

Anyway, one of the catergories was loudest exhaust. Now these are all street driven cars. my car has the chambered system from Mid America. It measured 119 db on the scale. I was finally beat by one of their club membbers who had a 502 in a '68, which he had to uncork to beat me. Now , I really don't mind losing (cause I have only won a trophy once). I got more of a kick out of other participants and spectators complaining to show personell as to the unfairness. They also gave out 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies for each class, C1, C2, C3, etc. It was very interesting how all of the 1st place winners and most of the winners overall were host club members.

Most shows I attend, the host club cars are display only and not eligible for awards. This not only keeps gripes like mine to minimum, but is also in good taste.

I value your opinions.....before the Lizards strike again

Ah........the "Good ol' boy" voting system!
I agree, it sucks. The last show I entered my '74 in, I got beat by a pos '70 model, with a quart of oil standing in the intake, rusty rims, barely any paint left on it, and what was there looked like it was put on with a roller! It won because it was part of a group from another local club. I decided then that I would not participate in that kind of show again.
Most of the local clubs here put their cars in a different class, so none of their members are eligible for the class win. They have their own trophies. It works out really well, as far as the host club goes, but there is no such rule for the other visiting clubs. There is strength in numbers!!

Same has happened to me...   but not to worry...

I was warned by others not to get dissapointed about showing... I get more trophies when I drive around town and someone rolls there window down to tell me how much they "love that car... wish it was mine", or some kid's (under 40's) roll up and give me a big smile and thumbs up... that is the true sign of how your car is in my opinion... that's why I drive it I guess... car shows to me are great places to gather and shoot the breeze... I'll go to them but not use them as a measuring stick as to how good my Vette looks...

Don't get me wrong. I'm not twisted up because I didn't get a trophy.  Mine was literally the saddest C3 there with the exception of some guy who thought he was Mark Hamel (lets see how many figure out that reference). My complaint/concern is that the host club shouldn't be able to compete in any of the catagories. Granted, at least half of the cars there belonged to host club members, but there were many as nice or nicer cars belonging to non club members..

Like I said before, I got a bigger kick out of other people complaing to the show officials about me not taking the loud exhaust contest than had I won. To be truthful, the only trophy I've ever received was a 2nd place . Guess how many Corvettes were there? LOL!!!!

Bottom line, I know about the good ole boy balloting. I just want to see fair judging. Backn73's  car was much better than the 2nd and 3rd place finishers but he walked away empty handed. I knew he couldn't beat a '69 427/390 car. Just asking for fairness.......

I thought I'd get more response on this subject.....come on everybody, I know we've all been burned this way....Lets hear about it and your opinion.

I agree that the host clubs shouldn't be allowed to show so the people who really care about the trophy have a fair shake. As for me, I could care less. I went to 2 shows over the past few weekends and there is a very strong likelihood that I won something in the Modified C3 class at both of them, based on the reaction the car got and the number of people telling me they were going to vote for me. Guess what? I left before they even handed out the awards. I pay the entry fees to shows so I can get a killer parking spot around other cool cars. I am with Ray (2 cruzn) 100% when it comes to preferring the reaction my car gets from the general public...that's what these old cars are all about. Daytona6938593.6269907407

Ya know, me & Mama got caught up in the car show stuff right after I got the '74 painted(the 1st time), and it was really fun! The first year I showed(98), I entered 12 shows, and brought home 11 trophies. Talk about needing a bigger door!(to get my fat head thru)
The one win I'm most proud of is the one that a friend of mine told us about, and he entered his '75, and we put the '74 & '85 in. It was a show to benefit the local "troubled kids" shelter. It was 90% lowriders & the "Dub" set, but it was judged by the kids at the shelter. My buddy won 1st in his class(open), and I got a 2nd in the '70s class. (Mama won a set of floor mats for the 'door prize'!)
That is what it's about! When the folks that just stop by to look, and get to vote, it really lets you know that others appreciate your tastes & efforts.
I also get the big thumbs up everywhere I go, just drivin around. I did get griped at one time, tho. Some dude thought I was "crazy to drive a car that nice in this traffic"!

I really don't even like putting my car in shows. Usually it's an all day kind of thing and you are just stuck there for the duration. Gets a little boring, especially when it's a nice day and you could be cruising to someplace fun or interesting. The cars that win are usually cars that seldom get driven. I built my car to have fun with, and that's what I do. Usually attend 2-3 cruise in's every week, and occasionally get a trophy at those. Don't really want any more trophys. All the shows I've been in are usually participant judged, hence the good-old-boy scoring. You can usually predict who the winners will be. Host clubs should not be allowed to vote, and people's choice shows are a lot more fair, like ones held during festivals, etc.

I agree with you guys! Nothing like a smile and thumbs up from people who really appreciate us keeping these cars alive. I always get a kick when someone rolls down the window and says they really think it's a cool ride. In my book that's better than a trophy any day

Its the same back here..  One of my prior cars (im not mentioning the ride or the event to be nice) was a 67 premium Chevy, the kind you'd give an arm for.  Other then a show repaint the car was 100% and a legit 94 point national level car.....   3 years in a row the car took best in unrestored class UNTIL the local sponcering clubs complained that an independent shouldnt win.  I know this for a fact, my bandmate is a club officer..  The 4th year the 3rd place car had paint peeled to the primer in spots and a replaced cheap interior.  No hardware for me.   The hardcore show goers werent happy either...  I go to shows for the social event, and to see good friends and nice iron, not the trophys...  So yes, I hear ya!

I show with our local club and we are normally the biggest turnout for our shows. But they do pass the trophies out pretty evenly most of the time. A guy came to our show for two years in a row and won best of show from over 150 miles away and his car in a trailer. I enjoy the trophies but I also like when we are cruising around and someone makes a nice comment about the car. That makes it all worth while IMO.
