I put in a quart today during my oil change.Drove it for awhile and it seems to run better and idle smoother but....could be the placebo effectRolling%20On%20The%20Floor%20Laughing zgator2007-01-22 15:17:27

My most recent recipe for long running motors is 4 parts castrol gtx 10-40, 1 part castrol syntec and an ounce or two of Lucas additive. but I would never put a whole quart in per change as directed. Thier trans. additive has helped temporarily recover some ailing tannys of ours. Thought they were goners, changed the fluid and added thier trans. stuff and so far has improved 2 neglected cars that we bought. I was sure I would have to replace the trannys immediately but at least it has given me time, they shift fine again. I'm amazed. it was very thick and hard to get in but it sure worked. Lucas oil add. is not like the teflon stuff it's more like STP which I would only use in small amounts for certain things ( gears) but if you use too much it's very hard to get in gear on a cold morning. all my motors go high milage so I'm keen on finding that extra edge for lubrication.

I have been monitoring this thread for a few weeks and gotta admit I hadn't thought about or used "Slick 50" for over 5 years. Ken's (who I would probably trust with my life) research has brung it back to my mind's forefront. Now that my Vette now has about 6,000 miles on a new mill, I'm gonna try it with Mobil 1, and too with Cat's Snapper mower (she forgets to check the oil occasionally and has fried a motor, UGLY!).

I have used the Lucas oil treatment on a salt-water boat with a Ford 351W for years after seeing the clinging oil in my parts house's display for several years and, after my tear-down for head gasket failure at 300 hard hours, still found some hash marks on the cylinder walls, it made me a Lucas freind. Boats are always fully loaded with little coast. Can't help but wonder what Lucas plus Slick 50 would do.....

Ken, your ratrod RULES, especially after the round trip from Cleveland to Pigeon Forge and back. You might think about the shiny red spray job.

Here's my current update for you since adding Slick 50 at my last oil change...

- I have had to reset my idle speed (downwards) three times now

- The last 4 days I have used the car every day (Americarna see seperate post) and for the first time since I have owned it (2 years) it has been starting immediately from cold instead of the usual cupla/three Rrrrr's (which as mentioned previously have been very much faster Rrrrr's since adding Slick 50.) This may only be due to using it daily tho. Although I can't think why... cold is cold isn't it ?

... will have some more MPG's to post soon, but so far I have seen an improvement of at least 3mpg.

So my experience has been all positive

i have added slick50 and my first impression is a bit unexpected.. after the first ride i had to adjust high idle a little upward.. and to my idea the engine got a little hotter ( about 10 degrees ) . well. maybe the weather condition had influence although  i can't imagine that.

Vette(s): 1975 C3 Red, T-Tops, Black Interior. All I need is time and money! Getting there!
Slick 50 is a metal treatment, not an oil treatment.  So it can take a bit to completely treat and condition the metal.  Usually about 1000 miles will do the trick.  The Lucas does make the oil sticky.  Too much Lucas will change the viscosity, and that can be a bad thing.  But some Lucas can help.  Keeping the oil in the engine at startup can only help.

Slick 50 is every 50,000 miles.  Lucas is every change.

But watch the total viscosity.  If the oil is too thin, it won't provide the protective coating needed to cushion the surfaces, and keep them seperate.   Howevery too thick will prevent the oil from flowing into small spaces properly, and dispite great oil pressure, the restricted flow wil create lubrication starvation and result in engine damage.

Most newer engines have much closer clearances to allow for the lighter oil.  The real reason they do this is to cut drag, and improve power and mileage by dropping internal friction.   Using a too thing oil in an engine with more clearance will not accomplish the same thing.  But using the Slick 50 will get you there.  So not too much Lucas, but some will help.  How much depends on the wear in your engine.  Worn, use the entire quart.  Good shape, limit it to about 1/2 quart.

My old Nissan Sentra was given to me as scrap.  It burned 1 qt of oil every 12 miles!  It had a cracked piston.   I tore it down to stop the smoke, put in 1 piston, rings, and valve seals.  I never intended to drive it much.  But when I needed a car, I thought I would drive it a while.  Now keep in mind the copper was showing on the connection rod bearings when I slapped this thing together.  My intention was to stop the smoking so I could use this thing in classes, not to drive.
But I dropped in the Slick 50 and started driving it at 138,000 miles.  It did finally die, at 258,000.  Not bad for an already worn out slapped together engine.

Thanks ken for that info., very helpful.  Oh BTW,  thanks to this tread, have started to use "slick 50" in all our all engines, vette, truck, tractors, spray rigs, yada yada yada.   Heck, even put in our go-karts.  Gona find out how well it works one way or another !

Update from me, still all good. MPG's remain around 3 higher than before Slick 50, cranking rpm remains much faster.
