Mine unlocked with the round key..if you can't get it to move spray some good rust buster in there..pb blaster or my fav deep creep..try and work the key in and out a bunch before you try and turn it..that will work the goop loose..then try and turn it slowly back and forth..once it does break free soak it in some trans fluid and run the key a bunch of times to make sure the lock is completely free..once done clean it good with brake clean and compressed air if you got it..you want to get the bad stuff out..then spray a little graphite in there to keep the tumblers up to snuff..spray the outside with WD 40..that will keep the outside looking good and rust free.

Yer trying to find yer spare tire before the trip!!
The same key that unlocks the door should fit the tire lock...unless the door locks have been changed.
If it seems to be stuck, try all the stuff Rich suggested before gettin too heavy handed with it.

That's funny how my square key opens the doors and starts the car..the round key does the spare tire lock and the center storage lock inside..I have the stock keys and they are the same way..who knows what GM did the day they built my car!.one other thing..if you cannot get this thing loose rig up a soda can cut in half and use maybe a block of wood to hold the lock in the fluid to try and work it out..last resort of course is drilling it off..which I don't like to do on a car like ours..

I do not lock my spare tire carrier. I have never had the spare out of the carrier or on the car. My round key opens the doors, locks and unlocks the glove compartment and the storage bins behind the driver and passenger. If I had it locked then the AAA guy could not get at the tire to change it cause I would have lost the key!!!

Great news! I actually HAVE a spare tire! For the first time since I've owned the car, dropped the spare tire and there was one there! Looks like new and still had air (low, though)! Filled it with air and bolted it back up! I guess that's one good thing about going to the Gathering. Got to make sure everything is ship shape!

The early Sharks('68-9) used different keys anyway. The same key locked/unlocked the doors and worked the ignition. Later cars had one key for the ignition only(square key), and the round key worked the door locks, storage compartment, and spare tire. The '73-early '77s also used the round key for the alarm system.
