Speedo stopped working. I tried hooking a drill to it and the speedo didnt move. Could it be in the guage itself ? I am trying to keep from tearing it apart. But it will be a good winter project along with interior and dash reapir. Thanks again.

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.

Do you have cruise? The cable may be broken there, in the speedometer, or the trans. Mine broke inside the cruise control module. The end of the cable was plastic, and it twisted right off. A new cable from Chevrolet was $24-$25. There are several different sizes though. be sure to get the right one
Good luck...

If you have cruise, unhook the top cable on the cruise unit and spin the cable by hand, you can see if the speedometer is working. If it is, it might be in the cruise unit itself. I just had the same problem and took a cruise unit off another chevrolet (not a corvette) and put it on and it works fine. I don't use the cruise control on my 80 vette so the electrical hookups didn't make any difference to me. I just used the gears so the speedometer worked. Hope you have luck with yours.

If you would like to have your speedo repaired, there's an outfit which does an excellent job. He also taught an NCRS Tech session at my chapter last year:
